I’m looking to replace the standard rubber grips on my 686 4” revolver with G-10 material grips from VZ. My usage is range and home protection with limited concealed carry.

My question is which to get, the Operator II (more grip) or the 320 (less grip)? Their website recommends the Operator II but they just look at bit odd to me.

Thanks

Operator II look very course for CCW I would go with the 320. I had Tactical Diamonds they were like sandpaper and not very pleasant shooting Magnums .

Just from my experience....I put on the VZ Diamond Back-Palm Swells...on a Browning Hp....and they were excruciating painful....bare handed. However....after a brief/light sanding....they became my favorite grips. Taking the sharpness of the checkering down a notch made all the difference.
If you go with the grips with less bite....it will be more difficult to increase texture.....than to reduce....

Due to the nature of both G10 and VZ's original materials, micarta and canvas, the checkering or lack thereof don't matter too terribly. Even their polished grips remain grippy in sweaty or wet conditions. I do wish they'd bring back their micarta and canvas grips again. They just have a warmer character and are less "industrial" in appearance than the G10. I remember the proprietor of the company not too long after they first started up saying that they worked in canvas and micarta primarily due to the issues of dust from grinding on G10. I liked them for the high quality and less "plasticky" feeling when compared to G10. Great grips.

Another vote for the 320. Smooth enough not to snag but still enough texture for a patent grip. I use em on J, K and N frames.

Go with what looks right to you ... I have found if I listen to my first "instincts" and go with my "gut" feeling it is usually much more satisfactory than trying to second guess myself or listen to what others say .
When I looked at the grips my gut said ....320 .
I'm not afraid of working over grips with files and abrasive paper to get the feel I want ... if I got the Operator II and didn't like the texture I would smooth them down . If you don't care to do this then go with the "gut " ... The 320 !

Get the textured grips then you can lightly sand until you get the feel that you want. Love the VZ grips. I have them on two 65's and 2 629's.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I've decided to order the 320 style and if I don't like them VZ said I could return them.

Thanks again all!

Update:

I received the 320 style grips but will be returning them. The good is that I do like the 320 texture; I think it would be good for most of my needs and wouldn't want anything more aggressive in this G-10 material.

The reason they are going back is because of the fit to my 686. There is a gap behind the trigger guard which I don't care for, but there is also a large, annoying gap at the top of backstrap that was really the deal breaker for me.

Take care and stay well.
