I'm heading up for a few days later this week to scout the area as a possible place to buy something small as a summer retreat to beat the Arizona heat, and to use as a getaway when I retire to the Boise area in a few years. Anybody with ties to or extensive knowledge of the area with thoughts to share?

Wallace is high in the Idaho Panhandle, where the nuts and kooks live! Do you really want to be around those people? It is also nearly 300 road miles from Boise, do you want to travel that far on secondary roads for a weekend? I would reconsider the area where I would want to look.

In the mean time, have you checked for properties on the property search sites like Realtor.com, Zillow, etc?

I'm well aware of how far it is from Boise. And, yes, of course I've checked out Realtor.com and done pretty extensive internet research as well. Which is why I noted that I'm seeking input from folks with personal experience with the area. As far as your "nuts and kooks"
and "those people" comments, I've heard the same thing said about gun owners and people in Utah. But thanks for playing.

Wallace is a cool little town and "the Center of the Universe!" Lots of history there, and not too far from Coeur d'Alene. I've never lived there, but I've been in/around that area a ton. Never saw any more "cooks or nuts" than in the rest of the country...

Kootenai County is has more Kaliphonians than LA. Those are the kooks someone is referring to. Non of us farther north go to CDA anymore.

Things obviously have changed since I was last there (20+ years ago), used to be a really nice area. Wallace used to have the only traffic signal on I-90.

I lived in the silver valley 44 years ago. It was still kind of the wild Wild West back then. You could ride with “The Wild Bunch” if you so chose. It was interesting to learn the lay of the land, especially on a motorcycle. They were filming some of the movie “Heaven’s Gate” with Kris Kristofferson there in Wallace. It can be isolated in the winter occasionally. I have always intended to go back for a visit one day.

I grew up in CdA. Joined the Navy in '59 and only went back to visit family.
Beautiful country. I thought about retiring there. but as pointed out earlier, too many Californians, I don't know if I could handle the winters and couldn't afford the property prices.
I know that parents of teen-age boys wanted to keep their kids away from Wallace as it had several brothels up into the 1970s. (They even turned one of them into a museum)

Actually the last one didn't close until 1991 or so. They were illegal but "regulated."

Late 80's in Missoula had quite a few bumper stickers saying "Honest, I have never even been to WALLACE, ID."

Nice little town with overhanging interstate running above parts of it. Very limited shopping, you're headed to CDA for groceries and Missoula if you're wanting no sales tax on items. Plenty to do and play around on or absolutely boring depending on your interests.

Politically the area from Spokane to Missoula is very much the same and filling up with non Rocky Mountain natives. There are a few pockets, but when the others shut down lumber mills and party as they close you may as well live in Berkely.

While stationed in Seattle I got my hands on an official 13th Naval District "Off Limits" list.
It had a listing of every known "cat house" in 4 or 5 States......
:D;)

Californians seem to be a problem everywhere out west. My son lived in Colorado Springs for 4 yrs and once Denver became over populated and unaffordable the Californians spread to the Springs. Manitou is crawling with them. My son couldn’t wait to leave. His next stop was Texas. He liked everything but the heat.
