A change in Wal Mart pricing indicates an increase in price from the manufacture. Academy got hit with the same increases a month or so ago. Their CCI also jumped 20%. It all depends on when their contract expires with the manufacture.

Stop blaming election and Obama for high prices and short supply. You nra/hoarder-prep people tend to make that mistake all the time. Blame it on the wacko guys running around killing mass amounts of people and children. If not for that we would still have cheap ammo and any gun at hand.

But, it was not the incident rather the Anti-second Amendment Crew reaction to the incident that put us in this place. They want to treat us all like we are wackos and use the opportunity to disarm the American population. For reasons entirely unrelated to Sandy Hook.

Went to Wally-World yesterday morning and found a box of Winchester .38 special 50 rnd box. Yes, it was a dollar or two more than the last time I purchased .38 spec. ammo, (which is the first box I have seen on the shelve in about 9 months), but I was sooooooooooo dam* happy to see the ammo, I didn't care that the price creaped up a little. I didn't have to pay GB prices or inflated gun show prices!!!

In my area, Walmart prices for 40S&W are inching up, not shooting up. Back in May I found and purchased Winchester FMJ 100 round value packs for $35.77. Never saw any of the stuff at WM in June or July. Now it's August and I have found and purchased 5 boxes at WM for $36.57 each. That's a "whopping" 2.2% increase since May. Still a pretty good deal. I'll probably buy some more at that price if I can find it.

Regarding some comments above, I'm twelve years retired from thirty four years as a high school teacher. Before I started teaching, I figured out that taking strong positions and making strong statements in the faculty lounge as a newcomer was certainly my right but but not necessarily "the smart play". I found it was better to get a sense of what was going on and the opinions people held on topics and to demonstrate my capabilities as an instructor before strongly presenting my opinion if it went against the consensus of the group. Being understated on an internet forum for a while and listening never hurt anyone.

Same here but WWB FMJ 100 .45 is only $40.77 and Fed FMJ 100 is $28.97. 9mm is down around $22-23 for the two brands! All that is pre-tax.
IMHO, tough to justify the cost for .40 in that range
The good news is I can usually find one or more of these three on any given day. I'm fortunate that I have Walmart stores nearby that draw on different distribution centers!!!
BTW, there has been a LOT of WWB 100 .40 on the shelves recently, like 5 across by 3 deep by 2 high in multiple stores at the price you noted below!!!!

After reading some of the above comments I had to go back to the top of the thread to see if I was still on the S&W Forum or "fat fingered" the keyboard and ended up on a forum of a totally different flavor.
The NRA haters forget that if it was not for the efforts of the NRA we would probably be posting on a scrapbooking forum instead of discussing guns and ammo.
Was off today, so I figured better join them than post negative things about them. Showed up at 6:45AM at the local Walmart, there was already people gathering around the counter, by 7am the guy came with a cart of ammo cases. Picked up two boxes of the Federal 325, and one of the .380ACP Winchester 100 packs. Cant really argue about the price, the .380ACP was about the same as what I paid at the LGS. The .22's were the first I have seen since before Dec. guess the price was OK, last time I bought .22 was in 98 on sale at Kmart just as I returned from living in Germany for years a Remington 500 pack was less than $6.00 at that time, and bought a few 1000, was time to replenish what we shot this summer teaching my daughter to shoot with the new P22 pistol.
Like most here I have not seen .22 lr at Walmart since x mass time, until 3 weeks ago. They had about 20 of the Remington 525 round bricks for $21.00. I bought 2. About ten years ago the same box of Remington at Big 5 in Chula Vista CA. was $20.00. I bought a few back then when they had a coupon for $10.00. So I think $21.00 is a real good price. I hope walmart keeps up keeping the prices down.

I think that some "hoarders" have been opportunists and have contributed to the ammo shortage. I buy what I need when I can find it at a reasonable price, no more. I figure that some one may need that extra box or two of .22 to teach their son or daughter to shoot or introduce their neighbor to shooting. I'd rather leave the couple of boxes for them than increase my supply.
I don't begrudge those who purchased guns in January and February--they needed ammo as first time gun owners or because they bought a new caliber. However, outside of those circumstances, to a great extent we created our own ammo shortage by showing up when the shipment comes in and always buying the limit.

You want to see prices shooting up on 22 ammo, wait till the EPA decides that all 22RF ammo must be lead free.
That limit in my area was one box per caliber with a max of 3 calibers. What many overlook is how little ammo was being received by the retailers. If a line of 10 or 20 people are waiting for ammo and only a few boxes arrive what is that really saying. Its saying there is not very much ammo out there to start with and what little is showing up is being bought out. I can tell you right now that if you were not one of the first 3-5 people in line at my local Academy you didn't get your ONE box of ammo. Ammo was scarce.
Stop and think about that. Academy, a 161 store chain, sending only 3-5 boxes of ammo to one of their stores in a delivery. Not talking cases here but boxes. The ammo disappeared long before it was ever delivered and put on the shelf to be sold. I can attest to the fact that there were many days when no ammo was delivered but people would complain that those waiting in line bought it all up. Just didn't happen that way. I know because from January 2013 to just last week I was one of those in line. There were days I could get my one box limit, days where there was no ammo delivered and those really, really rare days (3) where my 3 boxes consisted of 1,000 rounds of Federal bulk .223, 500 rounds of bulk UMC 45ACP, and 1,000 rounds of UMC bulk 9mm. For the most part I had to be happy with a 20 round box of .223 and that was it. Sometimes I could get my 3 boxes other times not.
What it all boiled down too was if you were one of the first 3-5 people in line your chances of getting some ammo was high if any came in but if you were sixth in line or greater your chance at getting any ammo dwindled the further back in line you got. It wasn't that people were buying the ammo up it was how little ammo was being delivered if any.

One of the gun dealers in the area has all you want to buy...priced about 25% higher than WM...but in line with what the local range is selling it for.
I just found 3 box of 380 / 50 on the shelf...late in the day for $19. And, if you've been looking for 380, you know it's pretty scarce and around $30 a box of 50 for JHP.

OK, here goes what I saw as of Sat Aug 24 @ Wally World. I was there buying pet supplies yesterday but every time im there-my body forces me over to their ammo counter before anything else gets done.
I noticed that for a change-they had many boxes of 50 rounds of Winchester "white box" 9MM. I noticed that their prices hiked about $3 bucks over what they were selling them at a few weeks or so ago. They had im guessing-about 30 boxes of them but--I passed on buying any. I know right now at Academy in my area-that the same is still approx $14.99 for same maker and number of rounds.
WM in my area-has not have any size of 22 in stock--at least when I get there) because one guy working there admitted to me that he buys what he can afford even before it comes out of their shipping containers. This guy IMO--is crusin for more than brusin--if his bosses find out--let alone some shopper who gets (for lack of better words) insulted by his admission.
Anyway, as far as Academy goes-the one in my area gets in tons of ammo--but the same ""Free-Marketeers"' get the big boxes first as well as other popular packages--BUT--I can still go in there about 85% or more of the time--and get a caliber I want.They now have reduced the limit by allowing people to buy two boxes per caliber per day--at least at Academy here in CC, TX.
Im about through with constantly finding nothing I need at WM--so ill just go to Academy from
m now on and not moan about it.

I met a supply manager who works for Walmart at our local shooting range. I asked him if there has been any changes in ammo shippings since 2012. He told me that especially here in Florida all the Ammo goes towards very large cities. Miami receives 60% of all the ammo they distribute

From my own asking experiences with WM employees-is--they will tell you anything just to get you out of their immediate area. In other words--you talk with 15 WM employees and you will get at least 15 different answers to your questions.

Yep can't help but thank those who refused to wait in line at Academy. Since January I have purchased over 30,000 rounds of 22lr. I've bought 7 cases of 1600 count CCI mini mags over this time period along with Remington,Federal, CCI, GECO and Wolf extra target match 22lr. Sometimes all I got was a single 50 count box of 22lr and sometimes a box of bulk was available but I would have gotten ZERO if I hadn't decided to show up early to ensure I got ammo.
A good portion was then used to secure 40S&W JHP ammo when you couldn't find a single round of it regardless of bullet type and a S&W 586. So thanks to those who refused to wait in line as you made it easier to me to acquire those items I needed.
A box here, a box there, a case every now and then and before you know it you have a nice stash of ammo. All it takes is time.
