At the range a few weeks ago, another shooter had problems with 9mm Walmart Win White box. The primer hits were fine, but no bang. I told him to talk to the local smith and forgot about it. Today, talked to the Gunsmith and he showed me the cartridge. He pulled the primer. No flash hole in the primer pocket. He said it wasn't the first one he had gotten in his shop. Happened to be at a gun shop about 20 miles away. Spoke to the owner. Same thing. Not just one round, but about 20 in a drawer. Different shooters, different guns, same problem. All Win White box 115 gr. FMJ. All 100 round boxes. Houston we have a problem. Has this happened to anyone else? I live in Northeast Pa. Maybe this is just common in this area? I really doubt that but, who knows. Anyone else experience the same problem? Sorry, don't have any lot numbers.

It was reported right here several months ago,I read about it on a NJ gun forum when several was found during a meet and I also posted about it on SW forum.

no flash hole

i got some winchester white box 45 auto from walmart and had one round without a flash hole, which is one to many. i don't buy it anymore.

Darn! I just bought two 100 round boxes of 115 grain WWB 9MM at Walmarfart last week.

Please post lour lot numbers if you have them.

I knew I should have purchased TULA, except I save the brass. Not one single round of TULA has ever failed to ignite as planned.

So much for Winchester quality control.

Then again, millions are fired each year with no problem and you don't hear about that.

This isn't premium self defense ammo. We buy it because it's cheap.

Ive shot several thousand rounds of that ammo without a problem. I buy the 100rd packs. So far so good. If a few happen to have problems so be it its just practice ammo to me.

"So much for Winchester quality control ". I know, right, a few problems in millions of rounds....god forbid! Like this **** didnt happen before the internet!!!! Besides we should be practicing clearing malfunctions anyway without looking at the cause

Winchester White Box has a place. I just 100 rounds of .38 today because all my reloading stuff is packed up. Need to test some snubbies at the range.

One bad round does not ruin the brand. Its not premium self defense rounds...its cheap target ammo.

I would prefer no flash hole to a squib round every time..

Just trying to give everyone a heads up. Maybe next time you'll get your squib.

Maybe. And maybe ill get a squib from a gold dot or Ranger. Not imposable. I'll complain when its more then a few per 100 and all the time.

I recall seeing the same thing happen with a certain lot of Lake City M 852 match ammo.....primers all went off, was discovered when some of use pulled the ammo down to see what happened....I bent several decapping pins before discovering the REAL problem.

We just pulled the ammo down, salvaging the components, and turning in the brass of all of that lot number.

Randy

Things happen....just NOT very often this problem shows up!

No flash hole = no bang = no squib. Bullet stays in case.

I've got close to 100 rounds of various manufacturers I've picked up at various ranges over the years with good primer hits and bullets still in the case. They range from cheap imported Chinese milsurp to super premium like Cor-Bon and Winchester PDX. The point is no QC is 100%, even handloads.

I think I'll add this thread to my collection of those "Defensive ammunition making should be left to the professionals." arguments against hand loading.

I've never had that particular problem before but I never buy WWB anymore in 9mm. Its the dirtiest 9mm ammo I've used, TULA ammo is even a lot cleaner than WWB. I always use Federal or TULA, both of which I can get cheaper than WWB and both are cleaner.

I bought one box of WWB back in 2009 when I first got my Glock and had no cases for reloading. It worked fine, haven't bought any since, but other than 2 dud primers, I've never had a bad reload.

I've never had a problem with WWB in either 9mm or .40sw. I didn't find it very dirty either. For economical reasons I've been using Ultramax. It is
a little dirty & smoky, but I haven't had any misfires or ftfs. I'm scared to
try the "good stuff" because it would be hard to go back to the other stuff
if I knew how much difference it made! I think I'm going to start splurging
every now & then.

Winchester white box would FTE on the Ruger LC9 that I had. Other 9mm ammo that I had ran ok. When I checked the extracting groove on the case, it was much smaller than the other ammo. It runs ok in my S&W 3904 & 5904.

I also live in the Northeast of PA and I have heard nothing about this problem.

IMO it's not a Walmart problem, it's a Winchester problem.

It's not just Winchester, I've had quite a few different brands show up with this problem over the years. Flash holes are punched during the case forming process and if the punch breaks on one of the machines it's up to QC to notice it and find the defective cases. Sometimes they screw up and don't get them all.

I've had all US makers, Tula, S&B and foreign military rounds in my hands with this problem. No one is perfect, action clearing drills really do have a use. One more thing, sometimes the primer gases don't leak out..the bolt face holds the primer cup in until you start to open it then the gas pressure blows the cup out!!...Had it happen to me twice, once with 7.62X54R military, once with Wolf 30 Carbine....both times saw a black dot wizzz out of the receiver, found the case on the ground with no primer and no flash hole....good argument for eye protection!

Last time I bought WWB was 2008, And Only because the WWB was as cheap as brass alone ; )

This has been a funny thread. I've had this kind of crud ammo from all the bulk brands, Winchester, Remington/UMC, Federal, and more. I've had bad Wolf and Tula. They crank this stuff out in the millions if not billions. Of course it's going to suffer. Add to that the crunch has been on for the last few years for more ammo hording than ever before. Plants run 24/7 in some cases trying to keep up with demand. And the social economics of the American worker mean leaner profit margins on US made ammo more so than ever before. This stuff is a volume sales product. Does anyone really think it's going to be without fail? Why do you think hand loaded ammo is almost always more accurate than factory? They make this stuff as tight to tolerance as fast as they can and people want to pitch a fit when they find and upside down bullet, dud, pressed in bullet, or whatever??? We should be happy that's all we find and it's as hyper rare as it really is.
