Was the S&W M&P 15-22 your gateway to a M&P 15?

I've noticed that most people first own a .223/5.56 AR, then get a M&P 15-22 second. The reason being they love shooting their .223/5.56 so much, they need a less expensive alternative.

My question is whether or not you first owned a M&P 15-22 then transitioned to a .223/5.56?

I'm having such a good time with my M&P 15-22, that I'm seriously considering a M&P 15-Sport.

I'm looking to buy a .223/5.56 also, I own the 15-22 first, but I own a ak-47 before the 15-22. I don't know if I'd be satisfied with the m&p sport though.

That's why it's great S&W makes different trim levels of the M&P 15. :D

For me, it will be a range gun. For that use, I think the M&P 15-Sport is just right. Just put on a Magpul MOE butt stock & I'll be happy.

I love AR's. The 15-22s big brother is expensive to shoot. Therefore, to gain the fundamentals of the AR, I bought the 15-22 first. I plan later on to purchase the .223/5.56

My 15-22 came with no threaded barrel, i bought one of the first ones when that was all you could buy. So I want my ar-15 to have all the bells and whistle's like the foward assist.:D

YES

Yes!

As a matter of fact, the 15-22P set off a cascade of fun. I'd been out of shooting for about 10 years when I first saw the 15-22P. Had to have one! Then the sickness set in.....MOE...tricked a bit luv it...PC...MP15 Sporter. Love them all, but I am hooked on the Sporter. Been re-loading/shooting, and shooting different commercial ammo and so far so good. (Still got to love 100 rounds for .04 cents v. .30-.45cents for 5.56)

Well the 15-22 is diffinately the reason why i'm going to Build my own AR-15...

My 15-22 was a stopgap and trainer for my BCM, which I knew I was buying before I paid for my S&W.

Started with the 15-22 as my first firearm, ever. Fell in love immediately, and only took me about a month before I started research for AR15s. I ended up deciding that the only way to get exactly what I wanted in a rifle was to build it myself, and after 2 months of research and planning I had my custom AR done. From first firing the 15-22 to first firing the AR15 - 3 months. It does not take long to progress into deep stages of Black Rifle Disease, haha.

i just shoot at a range. I had a 9mm handgun, and noticed that rounds are like 30 cents each. So i got a sig 22 mosquito (which only will shoot cci mini mags), but lots less than 9mm.

Figured that since i am only at a range, no reason to get anything other than mp15-22! they say a boat is a big hole in the water that you pour your money thru. there must be an equivalent saying about range shooting...

The M16 Rifle was my "gateway" to the M&P 15-22. The S&W version of the AR15 is at best second tier with a nonstandard upper receiver (where the gas tube enters). Nice mass market AR15 though, for most purposes.

and I do most certainly concur with that statement, since I've owned the 15-22 I'm all about builing my own, and also I've even branched out further and bought a myself a new AK-47 as well

Chuck-S,
Sorry I am not following your take on the S&W,what do you mean by second tier non standard upper? I have owned no less than 10 AR's from 4 different Maufactures and the only difference was that Colt had different size pins! The S&W that I bought is the PSX version that is a gas piston and I have to say that of all the AR's I have owned this gun is so smooth in operation it is unreal. I also just finished building another one in 5.45X39 the upper was already built so I didn't notice how the gas tube enters the receiver, and I also havn't had a chance to shoot it yet. I also have the 15-22 and find it very practical for practice so help me understand your statement! Thanks

I think what Chuck means is that the M&P 15 does not comply with the TDP like Colt, Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, etc. Since prices have come down noticeably on these "First Tier" rifles, the question becomes why would one spend similar amounts of money on rifles that do not meet the TDP? Mostly this means rifles from Bushmaster, DPMS, Delton, Olympic, etc. S&W's rifles seem to fall somewhere in between these lower tiered examples and the top tiers.
I don't mean to start a rifle-brand-flame-war, just trying to answer your question.

Right there with you 1fly2ty. What exactly is TDP. I was under the impression that the two DPMS rifles I have would accept any of the standard "off the shelf" AR parts.

As for the original posting about what comes first. In my case it started with a 5.56, then went up to a 7.62, then the 15-22. Oh yeah, then a 15-22P, then another 15-22. Right now I am dreaming of either a .458SOCOM or a .50Beowolf. Its gonna take a while to save those pennies, so I think I have plenty of time to make up my mind.

Stickbug,
I was raised not far from where you are, woodbury NJ went in the Navy and stayed for 21 years! I too started with the Standard Ar in 5.56 and when they sprung the 15-22 on the public I figured why waste all my 5.56 ammo when I could use .22LR. I haven't let my wife shoot it yet because the last time she shot my .17 HMR I had to buy a second one. Well I hope we get an answer soon on TDP. This is why I don't text i got lost right after OMG & LOL!!
