well about 10 min ago I had to go smoke, so I walked outside and lit one up and went walking around my gated community, and I saw a guy walking his dog, keep in mind it is a wee bit after midnight, so I go to a place where I can see him a little better because I am not sure who he is or what he could be up to. So I wanted be able to see his hands. As he nears me I could see he has a military issue flattop, and we have a base right up the road so I calm down a bit. Well he finally sees me and apparently I am not the type he likes to see at midnight, because he slowly slid his hand into his front pocket and I can see his hand wrap around something, so I did the only logical thing I could think of, placed my hands in plain sight (but not real far from my gun) and told him he has a nice looking dog. I can understand where he is coming from, I am 6'1" 130lbs covered in tattoos with long hair and 1/2" holes in my ears, wearing dark colors like I always do, so I probably spiked his radar pretty well. But strangely I am looking at it as it being good to see someone who takes their personal safety more seriously than the sheeple do.

That's why I always walk around at night wearing a suit, top hat, and monocle while twirling a cane. NOBODY gets nervous when they see me coming. ;)

Actually, if I were to walk around my house at night, I'd take an AR with night scope.. no people around for miles (well.. almost a mile) just dang coyotes.

A little overzealous on his part though in my opinion. I've only placed my hand on my gun while carrying once.. and that's because two guys leaning up against a building nudged each other and nodded in my direction as I approached. 642 in the jacket pocket. I guess I understand him wanting to be able to get the quick draw if need be.

Overzealous? I would've done the exact same thing!

This reminds me of the stories of that old time gunfighter John Newman. He would carry one or two slip guns in his oversize pockets. If he encountered a shady looking individual, he'd keep his guns in the pockets but pointed at the guy with the slip hammers held back with his thumbs. But then those really were different times.

People in the know, know what a hand sliding in the pocket means. My wife and I had a run in with a would be mugger last September. When my hands dropped in my pockets and I gave him "that look", I could almost hear him crap his pants. He disappeared like a vapor. My wife is very tiny, and I'm no giant. I'll guess that he outweighed me by 70 + pounds. His plan changed when he saw I had an equalizer. ;) I didn't draw it, but he got the message. ;)

A hand slide can do wonders. Back in my drinking days I was lost outside of Chicago after closing a bar so I pulled up to a couple guys on the street to ask directions. Within seconds there were at least a dozen gang members all over the car. I didn't even have a gun then but I slid my hand between the seat and console and demanded someone tell me where the **** Jackson St was and they backed off real quick and one of them actually gave me the right directions. I'm so glad I don't drink anymore.

yeah but i knew that as long as I din't pose him a threat he wouldn't pose me one and we went our seperate ways, wasn't really 'scarey' because I knew he wouldn't harm me unless I gave him a reason.

The only problem I have with a hand slide is in this case.. two guys both going about their business meaning nobody harm. What if Guy one gets a little uncomfortable and slides his hand closer to his gun. Guy two sees this and also gets uncomfortable so he does the same. Guy one sees this as an added threat and gets a firm grip on his gun. Guy two sees this and escalates the situation even more.

Sound over the top? Perhaps. But let's look at the OPs story. What if he hadn't been thinking about the situation and instead of putting his hands in plain sight decided to put his hand closer to his gun.. The other guy who was probably a little concerned about OP's appearance may have seen it as a threat: "that punk's grabbing a gun!". He overreacts and draws.

All I know is that for me, my draw is only a very small fraction of a second slower when my hand is in a nuetral position then when it's in a "I have a gun" position.

That being said, I can see the point of how doing so could be a deterant for a bad guy.

NO FAIR! 6 ft 1" 130 lbs? A man dont stand a chance with you when the shootin starts! Specialy ifn you turn sideways!

LMAO that's what clint smith said! it's the little guys you got to be scared of, it's kinda like trying to shoot a matchstick, not real easy!

In California a 'Hand slide' can be considered brandishing ... bad juju here.

Amazing how one's dress can affect perception. Sometimes I wear black tee shirts and camo pants with black boots, and sometimes I wear bright colored Polo shirts with plaid shorts. I'm sure I'm much less intimidating in the preppy clothes, and more "assertive" in the other clothes. In both situations though, no less well-geared ...:D
