I think everybody considered this a pretty great vacation. The highlights were going on the fishing charter, catching a lot of fish and releasing all except a grouper and yellowtail snapper. I was pleased when my son said, "I could do this all day." That's it, take to some healthy pursuits. He found a small restaurant, the 'Flaming Buoy'. The folks there were extremely pleasant and accommodating and they took his grouper to the kitchen and cooked it to perfection. My steak and everything else was great, too. It was the best restaurant we visited the whole time we were there.

My favorite tour spot was the Earnest Hemingway house. We learned a good bit, and that there are more movies based on his books out there than we knew about. We saw descendants of his six-toed cat. Seemed like a great place for a writer to live, or maybe a was a place for a great writer to live.

My wife wanted to see the sunset over the Gulf, but cloudy weather didn't cooperate. Mallory Square was fun, though. The street performers were very entertaining. The weather overall was very good, except for the one day when the tropical storm came through the rain came down sideways all day. We were walking into Benihana's and I had my umbrella held out straight behind me because that was where the rain was coming from.

The water was murky so my son didn't get to snorkel, but we fished at Fort Zachary Taylor park and caught several kinds of fish that we released. Our condo, though pricey, was gorgeous and the balcony was humongous. We were on the fourth floor and my son and his friend went outside and there was a big iguana sitting there. They say not to leave the doors open or you might get visitors.

Whatever it cost us, as a vacation, it was worth it. My wife got a good break from her job. Now we get to come back and start taking care of the house and yard again.:(

Pictures: Missus Smiff at Mallory Square and the view from our balcony.

The Florida Keys is on my list of places to visit in the next couple of years. I plan on riding their on the motorcycle so I'll have to do some careful planning and try to avoid as much snow, rain, and hail as possible between here and there. The wife and I have been making shorter vacations in the motorcycles getting prepared for the Florida trip. We actually just got back from a 2,500 mile ride through Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.

What do you do if you encounter a thunderstorm, and you're on those bikes instead of in a car?

How do you take what 'd amount to normal luggage, in a car?

To avoid lightning back in the day, you'd try to get a weather report before you hit the road each morning. If you got caught anyway, take cover where you can. More than once, we would take cover in gas stations.

Nowadays, we have six weather channels on the bikes radio, and real-time weather radar on the GPS and cell phones.

Touring bikes with saddle bags can have luggage racks and form-fitting luggage liners that matches the saddle bags shape. When I tour with my husband, he gives me a side bag and half the trunk bag.

It's more limited luggage than car travel, but way more fun.

Glad you had a great trip! I have reached the point that I value experiences rather more than things. Your family will remember this trip more than any expensive gadget you might have bought instead.

I couldn't agree more. I have more stuff than I need and would rather spend money experiencing new things and making memories.

It had to be 1995, because my boy had just graduated from high school. We were riding west on I90, headed for Creighton, SD, north of Wall, and ultimately to the Rally in Sturgis. About 4 pm, the western sky went completely black, and lightning started hitting the hills around us.

After a pretty close hit, I went up the next ramp to the truck stop at Kadoka. The coffee shop was full of bikers shaking off the water and taking refuge from the storm.

"What did you think of that last strike, kiddo? I think it hit that hill right next to the road."

"No, Pop, I was about 100 yards behind you. That lightning hit the road right between us. All I saw was a big ball of fire. I thought you were gone."

Electrical storms out there can be pretty scary. Cover can be hard to find.

As for luggage, select your gear carefully, and take just what you need. Easier said than done, to be sure, but you don't need a whole week's worth of underwear. Day one, wear it. Day two, turn it inside out. Day three, trade.

Yeah, a couple of S&W revolvers would make good memories too. I do have family, though. And believe me, I'd rather have a vacation like this with our son than most of the vacations over the last years. However, this DID cost a small fortune.

I saw that a huge number of people rated the Dry Tortugas trip as excellent. I told my son that if he comes back he should make that trip.

I never enjoyed 'attractions' and I'm getting to where I like them even less. Las Vegas.....don't even think about it.

Yeah, my wife lived there in the late 50s. Her Dad was on a Navy vacation there, too.

Motorcycle???? My pills, cpap machine and all that I would need one of those motorcycle trailers for my stuff alone! And with the weather changing you can expect more and more severe storms.

We have been to Key West several times. Good place to "visit"
The Hemingway house was my favorite place to visit. Some great restaurants and lots of weird people there.

Did you go to that Jewelry store on Duval St and get your ear pierced by the cute woman with the big Tomatoes ?:D Did you stay up late and get stupid on large mixed drinks?? Did you go to Captian Tony's? My business card is on the wall under the purple brassiere.
Best way to enjoy a place like Key West is to go feral ;)

I lived there for 3 years back in '72 -'75 stationed at Boca Chica, I've been back several times since and it's a totally different place than it was back then. Very touristy now, and expensive but I still love the place.
