went to the barber shop/came home with a Winchester

Then there is the Winchester Model 24 - the twin to the Model 37, but it's double-barreled. It was available in 12, 16, and 20. I don't think it was made in 28 or .410.

Those have got to be the ugliest side-by-side ever made in the USofA!

My old man didn't believe in 410s, he gave me a 12g 94 Stevens
when I was 6. He cut a inch off the stock and put a slip on recoil
Pad on it. 30" FC. He bough Sears & Roebuck low brass Sport
Loads for me. I remember him giving me a couple Mark V in case
I got a long shot. The first time I shot one I was squatted down
shooting at a high angle. It scooted me back on my butt and
filled my back pockets full of dirt. My shoulder didn't feel to good
either.

My barber (87) sold his shop & retired 24 years ago. But he still cut hair for a few old-time customers, I was lucky enough to be one, at home in his old one car garage.....which he'd been using as his reloading room for 50 years. How's that for decor?

They have a certain charm, sort of reminiscent of the Ruger Red Label design. But they are far from cheap when you see one for sale - usually $500 and up. The Winchester name does work magic for price. I had a friend in high school who had a Model 24 in 16 gauge. I always admired it. I had another friend with a LeFever 12 gauge double gun. I admired it more. I have never owned a SxS double gun (with one exception not worthy of mention), but always wanted a Winchester Model 21.

There was a time that Win 24s were sleepers, not much market
for them. A lot of guns were in that class until companies went
out of business and cheap stuff came on the market. So of the
imported SXSs are junk in the box. They have hammers with
firing pins mounted on them. Crude to say the least. I don't
think any American company made any absolute junk. I don't
particularly like SxS or OUs to hunt with. I get a lot of 12 & 16s
on trade and they don't last long. One in a while I will get a
Lefever, LC Smith or even a Parker. The makes and store brands
on pre depression American SXSs are like snowflakes. Most of
them are superior to low end stuff made today.

That's a real beauty! Reminds me of my Stevens 940A 12 ga single shot that I bought new in 1965. I also bought a .410 insert that I still have. I wonder if they made alternate gauge inserts for Winchesters...

For looks in long guns, there is nothing prettier than a nice side by side shotgun, especially in 20 gauge.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

20s are nice but the ones that catch my eye are 16g bird guns
that you swear are 20s when you pick them up. They are usually
in higher end makes. I don't like 16g as a rule. My gunsmith was
a West Virginian and we had a running argument over 12 vs 16g
for 50 yrs. He got the statistics of ammo sales of 16g and WVa
and Alaska were top consumers.

The Savage 410er insert will work in most American made single
barrels.

I grew up on a farm in South Dakota in the 60's and 70's. I had one of these in 16 gauge from the age of 15. Man, I brought down a bunch of pheasants over the years with that piece. Mine was, needless to say, showing a lot more wear and tear than this one. Congratulations on your find.

Model 37, 20 ga, 28" full in 95-98% overall with really nice wood too. I went there to get a name and number of a knife repair guy for ole joe clark. didn't even get a hair cut and spent a lot more money than I thought I would today. did I mention my barber shop is also a gun shop? enjoy. lee

SOOO, YOU CAN GO TO YOUR LGS TO GET A HAIRCUT AS WELL.....

IMHO, YOU ARE ONE FORTUNATE GUY. YOU NEVER HAVE TO ALERT THE BRIDE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO LOOK AT GUNS AGAIN. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SAY THAT YOU ARE GOING TO THE BARBERSHOP FOR A TRIM......

WHAT WOMAN DOESN'T LIKE A WELL GROOMED HUSBAND ? ? ?

Sweet!

Last December I picked up a really nice 16GA model 37 for $50 (and an Ithaca 37 for another $100) at a yard sale. I don't grouse anymore when the wife wants to check out the neighborhood sales.

Nice purchase Lee!
Glad you grabbed that one so o didn't buy both!
I'm working on the little brother to this 20 as I bought the M37 Winchester in .410. Mine isn't as nice as this one, metal is good but my furniture will be redone soon!
Lee, we definitely got a deal!
Good to see you again

Jason
