What am I missing

I'm not sure if this is just a case of over zealous bidding or if there is something special about this pistol.
Someone please help me understand the outcome of this GB auction. I can see this is primo condition of both the gun, box, and documents, but there has to be something I am missing.

As soon as I opened this thread I suspected it was Gunsrc. He/they tend to get absolutely astronomical prices for Colts, Smiths, and everything else they sell. Often from bidders with little or no feedback, or repeat customers. Some of their guns look legit, while others definitely have been "improved" if you know what I mean. I have no idea what is going on with them, but I don't consider their auctions to reflect actual market trends.

I saw the smiley face, AJ, so I get you were joking.

But the guy who wrote the ad is either purposely misleading people or just doesn't know what he's talking about. He did say "Early 1973" whatever that means. But actually "early?" Hardly. The -2 came out in 1961!

As for scarce, not that either. The 5" is somewhat less common but not that hard to find. I bought this one in 2015 with the box for $450. Yes, I got a great deal, but . . .

But, the biggest reason is that when you compare a Smith just like the one sold there to a new one that Smith puts out now, you can see why the prices just keep rising...
Was in an lgs last weekend, handled a model 19 a new one and the difference, as I've mentioned before is just staggering!! The fit and finish and the worst part, the action on the new ones. It's horrible- there is actual creep in the single action pull and the double action pull.isnt smooth at all
In my experience, unless you get a performance center gun, it's gonna suck. And even the PC actions aren't as good as the older Smiths imo
Yeah, when I compare an older Smith to a new non pc Smith, I feel that the older Smith is worth at the very least twice as much as what the new one is
More really! Hell, the older ones are 10 times nice than the new ones
Now, that doesn't mean that they are worth nearly 6 grand lol but, they are dang sure worth more than what a lot of yall think they should be
Smith will never make em like they used to
And, these really nicer old ones will eventually dry up

I'm no GB or S&W expert by any stretch. But I've seen many pistols on there and I'm like WOW! There's no way I'd pay that for that gun.

Like half the auctions on there start out "rare", "scarce", "hard to find". And even with the tiny bit of knowledge I have I know they're not that "rare".

I've seen auctions for guns that in my humble opinion are pretty dang rough! And the description says "really good shape". At any rate buyer beware.

But hey on the other hand something is worth what someone is willing to pay. If the buyer is happy, more power to him.

I don't feel so bad now by asking $1900 for mine in display case. It gets a lot of attention but no buyers yet. I do not use the web to sell guns and Atlanta is not the best place in the country for selling fine S&Ws, but I have patience. Actually I don't care if I sell it.

5 G's + is a bit on the crazy side.

Two bidders badly wanted the 27-2 and that is what resulted in the high hammer price. The serial number suggests the 27-2 was actually shipped sometime in 1974, but that is probably unimportant. I have seen this before and will see it again (the beauty of auctions). Like Miracle Man said in post #15, as long as the buyer is happy.

I bought the 27-2 shown below (shipped in October 1968) a couple of years ago for less than half of the hammer price and am satisfied with the purchase. The revolver came with the box, literature, and accessories. I bought the .357 to shoot and am not disappointed. Click on the photo for a closer look.

I was at the Tulsa Gun show this weekend and saw a few 27-2's in mint condition with the factory box carrying 1800-2400 price tags, and I actually think that is closer to the mark than that GB auction. Thanks for the input everyone.
