I've wanted to own a model 66 for a while now but always seemed to run into "deals" on other stuff that would eat up my cash. I just about have my M&P40 paid off (a "deal") and so I've started trying to price the 66's. Id like to find a 6" barrel model in very clean condition. Doesn't have to be museum quality but good enough that anyone looking at it (including me) would say "Wow, that's a nice clean pistol". I'd like a -2 thru a -4 nothing newer and if it's any older it'll have the pinned barrel and probably cost me a lot more. I'm sure there must be M66 owners here that are a lot more familiar with pricing (and "what to look for's") then I am. I'll sure appreciate any advice that can be offered.

Just watch em on gunbroker. After a week or two you'll know a deal when it shows up.
6" do seem to bring a premium on the 66.

Yeah. From what I've seen in the last couple of days the 4" can be had for less but I think the 6" would prove more accurate because of the longer sight radius. Also to be honest, I love the looks with the longer barrel. Looks like a gun I would keep for a while. I want a decent target pistol without the weight of an L frame or larger. The only thing I don't like about Gunbroker is the number of listers who want to start their bidding at prices well above market. I see a lot of guns on there listed at more than what I can pay for a new one. Of course, with a model 66 there is no option to buy a new gun.

I consider myself very lucky to have bought these three 66s during 2011 for $432 (6" -2), $450 (4" -2) and $416 (2.5" -4). All were bought on Gunbroker and I had seen several that were not as nice bring more, so I was happy to land these three. Frankly, I would have happily paid as much as $100 more for each one.

The 6" and 4" have target triggers and hammers and the 4" has a trigger stop, which I've learned is unusual for a -2. All but the 2.5" had their original checkered target stocks, which are back on them now. The 2.5" came with rubbers. All three are like new.

Maybe you can tell me, what is the difference between the standard trigger and hammer and the target versions.

The best way to tell what they are really going for on GunBroker is to look at the completed auctions (30-60-90 days) and see what the guns that sold actually went for. Ignore the guns that did not sell as that was the market's way of telling the owners their items were overpriced to begin with. I always tell my son something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. If you buy the overpriced items you will force the prices up for all of us in the future. My $.02 worth.

Easier said than done. Most of the time it will time out. Even if it does call up the completed auctions, most of the time it will time out when I try to go to the second page. I guess I just don't have the patience for it.

I agree that you can't go by the starting bids on GB to get an idea of market value, but you CAN get a good idea by watching what they actually sell for. Those overpriced guns will sit there with no bids for weeks but if you watch the penny auctions or the low opening no reserve auctions you will get a real good idea of what the market value is. I will routinely tag items to "watch" on GB just so I can see what they sell for.

Somewhere between $400 and $650 depending on condition and dash number. Also, whether it comes with the original box, grips, papers and tools.

If you're patient and look around, you can still find deals out there.

Just seen a M66 2.5" rb for $450,M19-4"blue %99 cond $499 and got a M36 no dash SQ butt nib for $375. There out there.

Target triggers have a wider, grooved surface and target hammers have a wider, longer spur. If you compare the triggers and hammers on my 6" and 4" Model 66s with those on the 2.5" gun, you'll see the difference.

I also look at closing prices on guns that sold on GB to get an idea of market value.
Problem (as I see it) is that there is no fee to keep relisting your item.
I routinely see the same guns advertised over and over trying to find a fish to hook. And it happens, eventually.
It always amazes me, but when I look at who won the gun, it's typically a first time buyer on GB with NR by his name.
Hopefully those newbies will learn from their early mistakes.

Timely thread. I just stopped off at one of my local dealers to find a freshly consigned 66-3,. ( 6", Target trigger, hammer and sights,98% with box & papers) Since it's been a while since I owned a 6", 357 mag, I took it home for the $420 asking price. Good luck with your quest.

I agree. However , the trick is to use advance search to survey ended auctions first. THEN the open auctions to see if there is anything out there you want.
