Hello and thanks for any advice.
I want to buy my Dad a revolver.
I have exactly $250 to spend.
What can I get as far as a Smith and Wesson is concerned?
I wanted to post this here before I went to the For Sale/Wanted section and get laughed off the board.
If you have something for sale, let me know.
I know $250 isn't much, but... well, everyone is hurting right now.
Let me know what you think, and thanks for your time.

I think its great you want to get your Dad a gun.

You can get a used basic Smith and Wesson revolver for around $250 if you shop around. This place has at least one for $225, and they're great to deal with. With shipping you'll probably be right around your price.

Firearms, Guns, Rifles. Grain Valley, Missouri.

Good luck on your hunt - don't get discouraged.

j&g sales has very good quality used S&W revolvers. i have purchased from them and they are good folks to do business with.

here are their current S&W revolver selections...............

Heck, he may not even have to pay shipping on that one. He's in Missouri too. Might just go get it, if not far away.

Plunky,

I don't imagine that anyone on this board would "laugh at you" for doing something nice for your father.

I just wish that I could share a cup of coffee or a moment of conversation with mine. He's been gone since 1982 and I miss him every day.

Good luck with your quest. There are deals out there and I'm sure that you will find a gift that your father will cherish.

Those M-15s and M-64s for $239 at J&G sales look like an awsome deal compared to the prices I see on Smiths at gunshops and gunshows, around here. The Glock 22s at Summit for 300 bucks ain't too bad a deal either.

Take a look at the GunBroker or other auction site. I was a little leery of buying something over the internet without touching it, but I have gotten a couple of good deals off there. You have to put in some time and watch for them, ask some questions, but that is half the fun. The other way to find something is take him with you to a gun show(s), and look around for the gun he would like to have. $250 will probably not get you a perfect gun, but you should be able to find something good and functional.
Good luck.

I have bought some excellent mechanical S&Ws but they had a little rust or freckles on them. This did not bother me since I just buy shooters. In that price range there is some out there. Lots of good guns are not stored properly and develop rust and they make good cheap shooters if you look hard enough.

I bought a Model 64 from J&G. Great price on a classic S&W. Excellent shooter. My gunsmith said it looked like it had hardly been shot.

Try to buy in a Face-To-Face situation.

That will limit you to Missouri sellers.

Buying form an individual will avoid sales tax.

Buying from out of state will usually add at least $40 to the price.
Shipping charges and transfer fee for the local FFL receiving the shipment.

Umm no he will meet you at a gun store for the transfer but he doesn't give out his location.

+++++1+++A for Firearms, Guns, Rifles. Grain Valley, Missouri.

He won't even meet you, he has a local FFL that he just drops the gun at and he handles the rest... but I know several who had bought from him with good results.

+1 for the surplus model 64's. The K frames just have the best triggers I've ever felt. Personally, I would try to find one with a spur hammer on it though, but that may fetch a little more money.

Another possibility is to find a local gun forum in your state, and check the "for sale" listings. I find tons of stuff on my Michigan website. I can usually find .38 snubs on there fairly often (various models) for $300 or less.

Good luck in your search!

Pawn shops are a great place to find something. Word of warning though- know what your looking at! See if they can hold something for 24 hours if you find anything, and do the research on the price, and flaws. That way you know specificly what to look for in certain trouble areas... I.e. cutting on the top strap, cracked forcing cones, various machining problems, etc.

Not only that, most pawn shops don't have a gunsmith handy to look at the guns to see if they even operate correctly, or fix things if they are broken.

An informed gun owner is a happy gun owner. (or buyer)

Good luck on your quest. :)

You can usually find a nice Model 10 used for that price, or the occasional Model 15.

I just bought a M-64-3 off of this forum for $275 shipped and my FFL only charges 10 bucks to do the paper work. It cleaned up to 95-97% condition and it should give me great service and easily last for the rest of my life.
