History is rife with examples of covers outperforming the originals. The National Anthem is one of them as the original had no set arrangement (the lyrics were grafted on to an English pub drinking song).
The best and most moving rendition I have heard was Whitney Houston's during the 1991 Super Bowl.

Stille Nacht (Silent night) is a very modest piece.
Said to have been written last minute when an organ broke down and the church was snowed in, preventing timely repair.
It was written for the guitar and is rather easy to play in classical form. Which makes the legend all the more plausible.
