I recently purchased an M&P MOE M4 that apparently is an 'Airborne Edition' with the Airborne logo emblazoned on the right side of the receiver, and a 'Helicopter Gunner' logo etched in to the left of it. I got it from the original owner (an Afghanistan war vet) who stated that it is one of 200 made, and is currently unfired. However, I can find no evidence of any rifle like this being produced by S&W, and no one seems to have any knowledge about it. Since I only paid $250 for it ( yes, I ran the numbers...it's clean) because the guy needed the cash, I'm not too worried about the value. But...what exactly do I have here?

Show some pics. That's a killer price for something he says that is rare. There are more knowledgeable people here who can answer that question. But it's probably something a LGS did to make extra money.

Hold on a second. Is this just a lower receiver or a complete M&P15? I don't think S&W produced a limited edition Airborn rifle but it sounds like it was laser etched. Pics would help.

I suspect this is most likely one of a couple hundred commissioned pieces. Units commission “deployment pistols/rifles” to commemorate their tour in Iraq/Afghanistan. Service members assigned to the unit have the option of participating in the purchase. This is a pretty common practice among units that have deployed. You will see firearms with unit crests, mottos, unique insignia, dates and other interesting things usually laser engraved because of the lower cost of laser engraving.

It's the whole rifle. The guy was hurting for cash, and he took it. it I am trying to figure out how to add pics to this thread....I am new to this forum.
Great find on your part. What I find disturbing though is that a veteran is selling such a valuable rifle at such a low price. Not knowing what his issues are, whether self inflicted or not it still raises a red flag for me. Just my .02¢

I agree. A quick google search showed two listings for these rifles, one at $1800 and one at $3000. They didn't sell at those prices, but I would assume that the Airborne markings would give the rifle a little more worth than the standard retail rifle.
