I'll be picking up a model 27-2 5" nickel gun in the next couple weeks. I wonder what you use to clean the gun with its nickel finish? I normally use Hoppe 9 and CLP for all my blued guns, but this is my first nickel gun and I've heard that Hoppe 9 is a no-no.

Flitz, when you can find it. I have a hard time locally. I also use Mothers Mag Wheel Polish.

Hoppe's #9 will do a fine job cleaning a nickel gun and will not harm the finish PROVIDED you clean the gun over a reasonable time period (say 15-30 minutes), and do not soak the gun for an extended period in the Hoppe's #9 solution.

I use Hoppe's for cleaning the bore and cylinders and use Birchwood Casey lead remover & polishing cloth for cleaning off the burned powder residue on the outside. Cut a patch size piece of it and run it through and you will be surprised at how much fowling it will remove even after you think you have cleaned it thoroughly.

and use that Birchwood Casey lead remover & polishing cloth a long time. it keeps workin' and workin'. it's great.

Nickel S&W cleaner

Good to ask early. I did not with my 586 nickel 4" and paid the Hoppes # 9 price of flaking on the frame at sharp edge next to hammer.

I now use M-Pro-7 on nickel guns with a bit of Lead-away cloth or similar carefully applied to remove cylinder face powder burns, plus minimal Flitz to shine nickel. [Mothers Mag Polish is very fast cutting and mere caution may not avoid penetrating the nickel.] RemOil or CLP sparingly as internal lube

Good Luck,

Dyson

My own special mix of Ed's Red.... equal parts of Dexron ATF, kerosene, mineral turpentine and prep-wash ( a solvent used to remove wax from auto-bodies before painting).
I add about an ounce of Mobil DTE light (machine oil) per gallon.

I swab the whole gun and let it soak for about a half hour.... then wipe the gun down with a clean soft cloth.

The mix will clean all manner of reside out and off blue, stainless or nickel plated gun without hurting the finish of the gun or grips.

It costs about $10 a gallon to make and works as good as any miracle gun solvent that I have been able to find in the last 25 years.

I have 109 handguns and all of 'em get the same treatment !
