What do you do with your magazines?

I believe that the name is a "storage cabinet" I purchased one from Lowe's (18 drawer, I think). At the end of the drawer is the make, model, and serial number of the firearm magazines or accessories that are inside - i.e. S&W 1911 Serial #XXXXXX.

I use small labels so several magazines or whatever are in the individual drawer. I carefully match those firearms that usually have no accessories (rifles) or at least usually only very small parts, with those that have magazines.

I keep all my 1911 45 ACP mags stacked on the shelf next to the pistol rack and the 1911 9mm mags stacked on the shelf next to the pistol rack.

I posted this solution a while back - a good way to use some old VHS cases. I keep them on top of the safe mostly - you have to remove the little hubs from the inside in most cases.

THIS is an AWESOME idea!

I currently have a magnetic tool holder stuck to the inside of the door of my gun safe, and it works pretty well for about 75% of my mags. The rest are stored in 4 bins that hang on the inside door.

But I really like the VHS cassette cases idea. I think I still have a couple of dozen of those laying around and that idea is one I really want to give a try.

Zip lock bags. I don't write on the outside because it sometimes smears off. I just toss in a card or tag with what they are. I don't own a bunch of semi autos, so many I can just tell at a glance. Other accessories get the same treatment, like sights. All that goes into my old library card catalog. Its got 60 drawers about 16" long each. Even some reloading components have drawers of their own. Mostly bullets.

I keep all the mags with the guns in the plastic cases they came in. If I don't have a case I have just been using a magic marker on them. I do like the bottom labeling idea though.

I just went in the gun room and counted; I have 29 different types of magazines (I may have missed a few). For some reason I have no trouble keeping them straight. I have eight or ten 45 magazines, not counting the ones in my pistols or mag pouches, and I keep them in a ziplock plastic bag. Same thing for S&W 39 mags.

Mags for a particular model # go in quart freezer bags with label. Those go in ammo cans with caliber label.

I have nowhere near the collection as some.

Helpful thread!

Some good ideas here. :) Turns out what I have been doing isn't all that far out of the mainstream although I am probably less organized than most just due to senility plus severe space limitations. :o I do tend to leave brand new magazines in their original packaging unless/until I need them. I also store magazines that came with a particular gun (or were bought for a particular gun) with that gun in the safe. Makes inventory much more time consuming but there is a certain method to my madness.

My single biggest problem right now is procuring enough magazines for my newer current production pistols. I'm in pretty decent shape on most of the older stuff (3rd Gens et al) ... just because I have to be. Extra magazines for my newer stuff I tend to put off due to financial limitations and that's not a good thing. I know I will regret it someday. :(

I should be so organized. I have knack for putting them in safe places so as to never see them again for months or years.

I haven't owned a P220 for at least 15 years and every year or so I run onto another magazine for one. I take em to work and give them to the guy I work with. He carries one.

Ha ha I resemble that remark, and that's what I'm trying to fix or avoid! :)

I keep all the mags with the guns in the plastic cases they came in. If I don't have a case I have just been using a magic marker on them. I do like the bottom labeling idea though.

At 50 handguns (and growing), I just don't have room in the house to keep all the boxes they came in stored in the house, and running out to the shed, especially in January to root through bags to find the right box is not something I don't care to do since I have to remove my riding lawn mower to do so. ;)

Some good ideas here. :)

There are some excellent ideas here! I never would have thought about the VCR box, and even though I tossed mine out eons ago, I found them on eBay for a very reasonable rate. I have a label printer, so I should be the most organized magazine freak in town after the boxes arrive! :D

I really like the VHS case idea.
I just write on the mag with a white grease pencil what it's for. I don't have so many as to need to box them up.

I keep my magazines with the pistol they are meant for. I have 4 M1911 platforms, each has its dedicated magazines in its case/pistol rug.

I've suddenly reached the stage where I have so many semi auto pistols that it's hard to keep track of all the magazines! How do you keep track of and store your mags? My safe has Velcro on the door, and I'm considering using some sort of bags with labels on them, but if someone has better ideas, I'd love to hear them!

I just put all mine with what they go with so I know what all I have, and where they are.

I read them and then mail a whole bunch of them to my nephew that is a crew chief for the F18 Super Hornet on a carrier somewhere.
Says he really like getting them....

I'm also trying to get a handle on my mags. I've got them spread out everywhere.

I need more storage solutions. Not fond of the VHS solution though that is a good idea.

I don't have that many. I have five for my Shield and they all fit in the range bag along with five mags for the compact .22 which also fits in the same range bag. I keep my dozen or so .45 mags in a old army tool bag and the four 9mm Ruger mags go in the range bag as well; an extra fits in the holster for the Ruger.

My SW22 has five mags all which fit in the SW22 range bag.

but I am going to remember the VHS case idea.

I've got a fish net kind of thing that hangs on the inside of my safe door that holds my pistol mags, but the pistol mags aren't the issue as I only have a few per gun. The AR mags are a different story, I keep those in ammo boxes.
If I have to use more than three pistol mags to resolve a problem I'm already reaching for the AR.
