what do you say when asked "why do you carry"

I heard a quote that is true..

Police are there to enforce the laws. They are not there to protect you.

It is up to you to protect yourself.

Most of the people that ask this don't want to know, they just want to spout their anti-gun views for whatever reason. So I have very simple reply if someone knows I am carrying. "Because F you, that's why" . Pretty well ends that line of questioning.

Some people actually manage to keep their wives from knowing they carry? Yep. They must have interesting marriages. My wife used to intuitively discover pocket lint in my pants that I didn't know was there ;) .

I carry a gun so 6 people wont have to carry me.

and Cops are to heavy.

Most times I just ignore them and keep keep going.

Sides , like I know these people.
 
Most people who have asked me were just curious. I think you guys need to stop being offended.
 
A few of my wifes family members who were not raised in a home with guns ask. They are looking for an angle to not carry. 2 of them have gone shooting with me and now own handguns. Who hoo and wow were comments after firing shotguns and pistols.

My kids don't ask, 2 of them carry.

If ever asked if that's a pistol in my pocket I will defer to the old Mae West line in a movie with a change. Nope it's not a pistol I'm just glad to see you.

I actually have acquaintances & extended family ask me that very idiotic question. Well:
1- I'm a cop (kinda supposed too)
2- Because I can...
3- The world is dangerous.

Then there's the inquiry of; "Are you paranoid?" My riposte is to ask them 'what am I paranoid of, I have a gun'.

There no cure for stupid & never argue with any idiot, they'll bring you down to their level & beat you with experience.

I've told other officers the same thing... And added,
"If'n I were to come along and two or three have you in the bar-ditch stompin the life outta ya,
and I attempt to intervene, what with being armed, I might be able to defended the both of us.
