In 1983 when I bought my new 4" Model 24-3 out of the Shotgun News I helped my friend get his first handgun. John Jovino's advertised used NYSP marked Model 28s for a long time at $189, IIRC. We chose that gun for him. He still has it but not the original grips. He mentioned putting the proper type on it. I recall standard service grips on these. Is that correct? Pictures of your similar guns would be appreciated. I wish I bought a couple myself!

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition, describes the run of 28-2 revolvers acquired for NYSP saying that they came with 4" barrel and red ramp front sight with white outline rear sight, but it does not mention what grips were on those guns. The 28-2 would normally have "magna or target walnut grips with S&W medallions and diamond inserts." I have no way of knowing what the NYSP revolvers were equipped with. Maybe a member on the forum that has one would be better help. When I bought my model 28-2 a couple of years ago, it did not have the original grips. I chose an Altamont classic panel grip with S&W medallions that was as close as I could get to a magna standard grips the gun would have originally been shipped with.

My guess is the NYSP M28-2 had walnut magnas. Prior to purchasing the M28-2, NYSP had placed a special order, cancelling it after it had started production because they did not want to wait 6 months for delivery. The special order was the Model 520, which would have been shipped with PC magna stocks, since when they were sold on the open market, that is the type stocks they came with. The revolvers are the same size, both with 4" barrels, the only difference being the M520 has fixed sights instead of adjustable.

They were ordered w/Factory Magna style grips.
I think they came with a 'smooth' combat trigger too, but not completely sure about that.

Thae smooth trigger is really nice, I wish I had one on all my revolvers. My M28-2 (not a NYSP gun) has the smooth trigger, and I believe unless otherwise ordered, all M28's came with magnas, as the gun was intended for LE use and was a "budget" no-frills model.

NYSP. 28-2. Jovino

Here is a letter for my NYSP 28-2 revolver.
But I'm guessing mine was cut down before leaving Jovino's
