What gun and load did you use for your ccw test?

I'm personally very glad I don't live in one of the States where you can "Qualify" with a .22 but it seems you're 'legal' to carry anything you want. This is one of the draw backs that I see to any testing requirements at all.

I used to "Qualify" LEOs and while they got to 'practice' with light target ammo they all had to actually "Qualify" with the same ammo that they would be carrying on the Streets!

I guess our State takes the "...shall not be infringed..." a bit more literally than some others. Because we also have Open Carry that doesn't require anything more than being a 'legal to own' citizen within this State.

What's the drawback?

If I take my driving test with a Ford Focus, should I be restricted from later purchasing a pickup truck to drive just because it's bigger?

Both my wife and I used a Colt Model 1911 .45 circa 1918 when we first participated in the Texas concealed carry course in the fall of 1995.

S&W 686 with 2 1/2" barrel. WWB 130 gr FMJs. Shot 100/100 with it! It is my fun gun at range and has a trigger like fine silk! Carry a 642 or 640 for EDC.

Which time? I have renewed so many times that I don't remember them all. Last time was a S&W 99 in 45 acp.

Chief Spl. circa '53. Only handgun I had at the time. Remington target loads.

There's no firing test in VA, I just had to establish that I knew vaguely what end of a gun to point downrange.

In Michigan I had to qualify twice. The first time I used an old nickel plated Colt Army Special in .32-20. Ammunition was 100gr Remington green and yellow box fodder. Why did I use that? It amused me to have that old thing out there and shoot it alongside the H&Ks, Sigs, and Glocks. (I had the only revolver present if I recall correctly.)

The second time around, I just used a borrowed from the range Beretta 92 and 115 grain remanufactured FMJ ammo. I'd never fired that particular gun before, and still had no trouble with passing.

Our instructor stressed before the class - when you initially signed up, to bring what you intended to carry concealed. Don't bring a 22 if you plan on carrying a 357 etc., etc..
Sure enough, a couple of bozos brought 22's and still couldn't hit squat at 10 or even 7 yards. The guy next to me couldn't hit the paper at 7 yards and loudly protested that there must be something wrong with his gun (a 6" 357). The instructor and I both put 6 out of six into a 1 inch group at 7 yards, certainly no great feat. He then asked how we were aiming...as in what should the sights look like when on target. (I am not making this up). Seems he had never fired this or any other pistol in his life. We explained what the sight picture should look like along with some basic tips to keep everyone in the area alive and eventually he managed to qualify....now this goober is walking around armed and dangerous.

Getting back to the original question I used my Ruger Police Service 6 in 357. It is a little large for concealed carry but the Smith 649 (subsequently acquired), works just fine as does the MP9C or the Bersa Thunder 380.

I have had CCW permit/License to carry handgun in Virginia and Indiana, and was not required to test for either, so I have never had a ccw test.
I think if I were required to qualify, I might use my GP100 with some cheap 158gr JSPs.

*I have qualified expert 6x (so far) with a Beretta 92 on the USMC qualification range.

Expert 11X in 30 year career. CCW qual was a cake walk! Are you Regular or Reserve?

As a Texas CHL Instructor, I have to qualify with both revolver and pistol every other year. I think I've used different guns every time I've qualified, starting in 1995, but I don't remember everything I've shot! For wheelies, I've qualified with a 6" Power Port 686, a 5" 625, a 3" 681+, a 3" 696 and a 2" 15-3, as I recall. For autos, I've used a Glock 17, a Glock 35, a Kimber 5" 1911, and last time, my frequently carried Nighthawk 9x23 Talon II Bobtail. I think I shot a Glock 23 one time, also. The Texas course is so easy, of the 14 times I've shot the COF (7x 2 guns)which would total 3500 possible points, I think I've dropped a grand total of 5 or 6 points, usually because the guy on my left had a Ruger P89 or the like, whacking me in the face with about 2/3 of his hot empties.

Almost forgot, loads: For the revolvers, I used .38+Ps in the .38 and .357s, Blazer 200gr. Gold Dots in the 696, and Federal AE ball in the 625. In the autos, I used whatever factory ball I had on hand in the 9mm and .40 guns (likely Federal AE or WW White box), Federal AE 230gr. ball in the 1911, and WW white box 124gr. JSP in the 9x23.

I used this 4 screw, pre-14, K-38 Masterpiece, with handloaded 158 swc's, not the ammo in the photo. Greg

I used a Smith model 65-3 3 inch barrel with my ccw permit class. I used wwb 130 grain load. I bought the loose 100 pack. rz625-8,Omaha,Ne.

Lucky for you, too, Greg, since neither the vintage .32 Win. Special nor .348 Win. would have fit worth a damn in that pretty 14!

TXDPS is quite picky about what loads they will allow on their range. No handloads, and in fact, they send us a list, and it's a pretty short list, of what brands of ammo are allowed. I do not restrict my students' ammo, although I have the right to do so, and I've had to stop a couple over the years and make them buy some of the range ammo, after I discovered bad reloads or ammo that just wouldn't run their semi-auto pistols.
