I took my Colorado CCW class in August of 2003. There was an in-class part for several hours, but I no longer remember how long it lasted. It did cover the legal aspects of carry and lawful use.
What really stuck in my mind was the required shooting qualification. I don’t recall if I shot the qualification with Specials or magnums. Following is an email I wrote to my brother after taking the class:
“I took the Gun class yesterday in anticipation of getting my CCW permit.
The class was a real eye-opener; the instructor let people "qualify" using a rest - at 21 feet! What's worse is that some people needed to use the rest and still had problems... Pretty scary.
You needed to qualify at 21 feet on the NRA 12" by 12" pistol target. 25
shots. Maximum points possible is 250. It took a minimum of 150 to pass (60%). He also let people qualify single action with no time limit that I was aware of. I used my Ruger Service Six (fixed sights) with 4-inch barrel and shot 232, firing double action. Anything 200 and over was "Expert." John (a friend) was in the class with me. He also shot a 232; but he shot single action. The instructor let people shoot until they were ready to qualify. Then he marked the target and they shot their 25 rounds. One guy was saying he didn't think he would be able to qualify. He sounded very frustrated.
I can't believe a "qualification" that allows bench rest, single action, and no time limit, for a CCW. It appeared that many of these folks
were virgin, or very new, shooters. They tended to have autoloaders, too, and some seemed overwhelmed with them.
I don't think I've shot my handguns since summer of 2001. I shot trap or
skeet with John twice last year. John said he thought some of those folks would get their CCW and then just put the gun away and never shoot it again. That wouldn't surprise me. It scares me that some of these folks will be carrying concealed. I hope they don't screw it up for the rest of us...”
Also, I don’t recall any reports of people with Colorado CCWs out blasting the wrong people or crazily swinging their guns around so perhaps my concerns were for nothing. I have mixed feelings about requiring a certain level of shooting skills to receive a CCW. Part of me says people should be required to show a certain level of skill. After all, the police are required to qualify. Another part of me says to heck with a shooting requirement; there is no test required to be able to vote, there is no test required to become a parent, there is no test required to go to church.
Colorado’s CCW allows carrying any concealed weapon. I qualified with a revolver but I can carry an auto.
