What gun did you....

I used my S&W 1006. It was the only semi-auto I owned at the time, although I generally prefer revolvers.

In 1980, 4 years after my CWP was issued, a new sheriff was elected and all Deschutes County, OR permits were "called in." We had to attend class and show proficiency. I used my nickel 19-2 2.5" Model 19 in a Bianchi Pistol Pocket and a 34-1 .22 rimfire. It seems like we fired 40 rounds. At the time we were allowed to put 2 guns on the CWP. Prior to this, CWPs were issued on an individual basis and no classes or training were required.

I used my Walther PPS and my wife used a Smith and Wesson .45 revolver.

They told me not to bring one. The instructor set a glock 17 on the bench and told me to pick it up and put two in the target at a whopping five feet. They took my picture and prints and my permit came in the mail two and a half weeks later.

I was at five and maybe contact distance,I literally shot a fist-sized hole in the target since we were so close.

Since I was doing so well he showed me a type where you shot two in the chest, then one in the crotch area (break the hip) the chest (heart/lung) and finished one in the head-I tried it slow then faster, pretty much pulled it off every time I drew and fired after that.

Glock 19.

Take it the shooting portion with a semi-auto. If you take with a revolver you cannot carry a semi-auto. If you take with a semi- you can carry either semi or revolver.

Colt Govt Model 70 Series 45ACP. Had to shoot an auto to be able to carry autos and revolvers.

Iowa has recently passed shall issue, but previously it was different in all 99 counties. When I got my first permit at age 20 in 1985, they gave a classroom lecture, a written test and a shooting qualification. My Dad bet me I would not beat his score several years earlier of 99% on the written test. I got a 98%. The shooting test was basically you had to hit a target about 10" in diameter at least 6 times out of ten at about 10 yds. They said "If you have a revolver, load only 5, shoot them, and then load 5 more and shoot again". I just put six rounds in my revolver, carefully shot them all double action into a nice group and called it quits. The gun was a 4 screw K-22 that belonged to my Dad. I know, a 6" .22 revolver is hardly a carry piece, but they let you qualify with anything you wanted, and I figured I'd do a lot better than with a Chief's special.
Two friends of mine took the class in December. Neither had any experience with handguns. They both asked for my help. After a training session where I stressed safety issues we did some shooting with several of my handguns. They did very well. One of them took my 60 year old Ruger Standard Model .22 automatic to the class, the other took my 5 screw Combat Masterpiece .38 Spl. Both passed without any trouble.

In Texas if you qualify with a revolver, your card says 'Revolver Only'. There's a caliber limitation, either 32 or 380 is the minimum, I forget which. First time I shot a Glock 19, on the two subsequent trips to the range I shot a Glock 36. I usually carry a S&W 638 in town and a Ruger Security Six out in the desert.

In VA you don't have to qualify. You can take an online class, which is an hour long video and 20 question test. Print out your certificate if you pass and you are good. Fill out an application for a CCP and take it and $50 to the courts. They tell you your permit should arrive within 45 days. Some localities require fingerprinting. I am in the City of Richmond. No fingerprinting required!!

Last time it was a Taurus Model 455 in .45 acp with a 2" ported barrel. I fired the whole course double action and the instructor was impressed with how smooth the reloads went. I wish I still had that revolver, but I sold it because I didn't like the ported barrel. The very first time I qualified it was with a glock 21 that I pulled out of the box the night before and cleaned the shipping grease off of it. No malfunctions of any kind and I shot 98% with that one. I have qualified several times in between, all .45's. Maybe I'll find a S&W model 25 before the next time.

. . . During the qual at the end of the course, Mas had occasion to call out words of encouragement to the group to the effect of "A guy with a five-shot snubbie is whipping your a**es." I was kind of used to shooting that 40, even with its thin front sight.

Frankly, I think a LOT of folks who carry five-shot S&W snubbies confidently for CCW use know darn well how to whip a**es with a handgun . . . thus they don't need to carry tupperware in their pants!;)

Back on the subject . . .

Here in Georgia we don't have to qualify . . . just pay your money, get the background check cleared, have full hand prints and you're good to go.

I have two different opinions about this process . . .

1. I feel the government shouldn't collect money to license something that truly is a right. However, since that doesn't happen EVERYWHERE . . .

2. IF a state IS going to license people, the process SHOULD produce better and proficient gun-handlers who also are taught and understand the legal and moral ramifications of gun use. From what I've been reading here, some "courses" are a joke . . . a joke you must pay for. That's wrong.

In Georgia, "shall issue" means that any yahoo who is not a convicted felon or a "beater" (domestic violence abuser) can get a license.

I truly wish we had a course here . . . and one that required handgun proficiency to "carry." I believe that people should know what they are doing when carrying a deadly weapon.

A course here would also give us reciprocity with other states with more "strenuous" requirements such as South Carolina. I HATE going into SC, when I have to secure my handgun in the trunk to be legal.

Ironically, my qualifications (former military, gun club member, handgun competitor) would automatically make me eligible for issue in South Carolina IF I lived there . . . but since I don't, my "lesser qualifications" GA permit is not honored.

Bottom line though . . . IMHO, CCW permits should be honored in all states that issue permits!

Did SC change the law about vehicle carry? You used to be able to just have it in the console or glovebox without a permit.

You could always get a permit from a state that SC honors.

I took my Colorado CCW class in August of 2003. There was an in-class part for several hours, but I no longer remember how long it lasted. It did cover the legal aspects of carry and lawful use.

What really stuck in my mind was the required shooting qualification. I don’t recall if I shot the qualification with Specials or magnums. Following is an email I wrote to my brother after taking the class:

“I took the Gun class yesterday in anticipation of getting my CCW permit.
The class was a real eye-opener; the instructor let people "qualify" using a rest - at 21 feet! What's worse is that some people needed to use the rest and still had problems... Pretty scary.

You needed to qualify at 21 feet on the NRA 12" by 12" pistol target. 25
shots. Maximum points possible is 250. It took a minimum of 150 to pass (60%). He also let people qualify single action with no time limit that I was aware of. I used my Ruger Service Six (fixed sights) with 4-inch barrel and shot 232, firing double action. Anything 200 and over was "Expert." John (a friend) was in the class with me. He also shot a 232; but he shot single action. The instructor let people shoot until they were ready to qualify. Then he marked the target and they shot their 25 rounds. One guy was saying he didn't think he would be able to qualify. He sounded very frustrated.

I can't believe a "qualification" that allows bench rest, single action, and no time limit, for a CCW. It appeared that many of these folks
were virgin, or very new, shooters. They tended to have autoloaders, too, and some seemed overwhelmed with them.

I don't think I've shot my handguns since summer of 2001. I shot trap or
skeet with John twice last year. John said he thought some of those folks would get their CCW and then just put the gun away and never shoot it again. That wouldn't surprise me. It scares me that some of these folks will be carrying concealed. I hope they don't screw it up for the rest of us...”

Also, I don’t recall any reports of people with Colorado CCWs out blasting the wrong people or crazily swinging their guns around so perhaps my concerns were for nothing. I have mixed feelings about requiring a certain level of shooting skills to receive a CCW. Part of me says people should be required to show a certain level of skill. After all, the police are required to qualify. Another part of me says to heck with a shooting requirement; there is no test required to be able to vote, there is no test required to become a parent, there is no test required to go to church.

Colorado’s CCW allows carrying any concealed weapon. I qualified with a revolver but I can carry an auto.

Even though we are part of the vast Left Coast, WA does not have a proficiency requirement nor restriction on carrying what you qualified with, etc. We have some other stupid guns laws though.
What to use? What do YOU like?

I qualified with a Ruger as in Nevada once you qualify with one revolver you can carry any revolver, and my Five-Seven (for semis, can only carry guns you qualify with).

Colt 1911 45ACP

We had to put a box of 50 (might have been 40?? I forget) on a man sized target at different distances. At the short distances I took out the X and made a nice 1-2 inch hole. When the instructor ran my target out to 50 feet for the last shots I just pulled off the target and sent the rounds down range. Perfect score! :)
