Is it me or does anyone else happen to notice that the thing you want the most, have the highest hopes for always turns turns to liquid slop when you finally get it in your hands?????
Back around 1991 or 2 I had an M1A all tricked out. Krieger barrel, the works...no expense spared. I discovered somehow that the Leatherwood ART II scope existed at one time and at first concluded that it was no longer available. Then in the back of I think it was a "Shooters Bible" there was the address and phone number to MAC in Stephenville, Tx.
I called them and was surprised to hear that my scope was being shipped that day. Back in 1991, $650.00 was a lot of money to me. I was so happy, I next day aired it...good thing they didn't have same day air...I'd have done it, no matter the cost. I couldn't wait to get my hands on that scope.
Next day it arrived...i took off work and went home to try it out. It was so neat looking sitting on that M1A. Off to the range and in total bliss I go to zoom it on up and the reticle turns 90 degrees and wont come back. I go home and call the gal and she says, "send it back, we'll put a reticle in it for you." 8 months later after getting the Texas attorney general involved I had another one. This one was right. It was only then that I discovered what a total piece of junk this thing was...although the design is a novel idea, it wasn't really accurate. I guess it worked good enough for man sized targets. Biggest problem was the turrets...they didn't have any clicks at all. The adjuster just slid around in a rubber washer that held it in place. Little index marks were there that kind of added up to 1/2 minute of angle but because the adjusters had so much lash and no positive click stops you never really knew where it was or how much impact moved until you fired the rifle.
They are still sought after scopes and thank god I didn't have any trouble selling it, even after I told the buyer my issues with it. I am really not a picky guy...but I seriously cant remember the last time I paid dearly for something and was 100% totally satisfied. So, after 20 some odd years of getting myself sold on various items I "had to have" and enjoying almost total disappointment....I quit "having to have" something.
