I have a single action, tip up, auto eject revolver with a spur trigger. The barrel length is 3 1/4". I replaced the hand with the aid of a Jack First catalog which identified the gun as a Model 2. second issue. The s/n is 17712 and is a .38 S&W. Thanks in advance.

Presuming it is an S & W product (beware of imitators!), it sounds to be a .38 Single Action from 1877. A “tip-up” hinge is on the top frame and a “top break” at the bottom, but fortunately S & W never made a tip-up in .38 S & W so at least that much is clear. :)

Photos are always helpful.

A lot of mis-informed people call the 38 Double Action revolver a No. 2 as well. Not a tip-Up, but a top-break since the hinge is at the bottom of the frame. A tip-Up S&W has the hinge at the top of the frame. The 38 Single Action has a spur trigger, while the 38 Double Action has a trigger guard.

With a serial number in the 17,000 range it can still be a 38 Single Action spur trigger or a 38 Double Action. Both models started with serial number "1". Let us know which?

Assuming it's a .38 single action, 2nd model, as stated, and ser. # is 17712, then is was made Jan 10, 1891. You will need to obtain a factory letter to determine the shipping info. Ed
