I saw a revolver back in the 80's that looked like a 586 with full underlug, was chambered for .38 special only, and was a K frame. Can someone please give me some info about this revolver, thanks.

You are likely describing a later model 14 (-5 to -7). There are a few good posts here about the development of the gun from a factory insider. Hope this is helpful.

This revolver did have adjustable sights and a 6'' barrel. The model 14- 5 or -7 sounds like it could be the revolver I am wanting.. thank you.

There was a small run of M586's made in .38 Special only. It was either the -3 or -4, I can't remember which.

You're thinking of the Brazil Contract guns. There were two contracts, one in 1993 of 586-5 guns (serial prefix BPY) and one in 1997 of 586-4 guns (serial prefix CCE).That's not a typo, the -5's were made four years before the -4's. Just another S&W anomaly.

Adios,

I think there was a .22 Combat Masterpiece, presumably some M-18 variant, with a four-inch bbl. and a full lug.

I have a Cobra Gunskin holster that seems to have been molded for such a gun. Could theoretically be for M-586/686, but it fits a M-66 just right and doesn't seem loose.
Of course, my M-66 doesn't have a full lug.

I don't at present have a M-686, but think I tried it in the holster when I did have one, and it stretched the leather. So it's prob. for a K-frame, which fits right.

The holster is a very nice one, in great shape. I think I found it at a gun show. Only one that I've seen molded for a full-lugged K-frame. I doubt they'd mold a holster for a gun that didn't exist.

IIRC, there was a perceived market for a factory K-38 with heavy barrel for use in PPC and other revolver competitions. Supposedly S&W started production on them by reboring unused Model 16-4 barrels (a sacrilege if it occurred!) and filled the initial order. I would assume they started with fresh barrel forgings to continue production. This was never a very common gun, but it was a factory produced model variant. Some of the real experts will be able to add more to this narrative, I'm sure.

No mystery here, there were full lug model 17s (-6 and 7) in 4, 6 and 8 3/8" barrels, made at the same time as the 617s of the same lengths.

Since the 38 special 586's were mentioned, figured I post a pic of my dads 38 special 686. You know, as an excuse to post a picture. :D
