Just received 10 boxes of 115 gr brass 9mm range ammo that I ordered from a class act online retailer. Price was $16.50 per box of 50 = $0.33 per round. It's a bit steep compared to the bargain ammo from January 2020 but a lot less than prices at the height of the panic buying.

I am glad to now have a modest stash, but it has gotten me thinking -- What is the current wholesale price of 115 gr brass 9mm range ammo?

I don't know the answer to your question. I do know my Lgs had to order 50k rounds of white box to get any order at all. This was 3 or so months ago.

Probably 6 dollars a box. For comparison the manufacturing cost of a Glock 19 is 80 dollars. So the ammo at full blown pricing is a bargain.

The cheapest I have seen online is 27.6¢ per round, I think if was Tula ammo. ($13.80/box of 50)

After being in my own business for most of my adult life, I can absolutely tell you, "wholesale price varies greatly depending on the amount one buys. Costco's wholesale price on items is a whole lot less than a mom & pop wholesale price.

When I was in business I paid "wholesale prices" that were once in a while more than huge chain stores sold the same item at retail! When I angrily questioned the manufacturer they bluntly told me if I bought 12 trailers a month they would honor the same price.

Getting back to ammo.......

A company like Bass Pro, Academy, Target Sports, etc. pays a whole lot less than your local gun store does - even though they consider both to be wholesale prices. It's just the way it is! So what is wholesale price - who the heck knows! Oh, and don't forget about the rebates that some of the big boys get!

The stores in my area want $20 for 50 rounds of brass case, 9mm ball ammo
and go up as the bullets get better, for around $32 a box.

I have not hit the net for factory ammo in five years.

I actually bought some Norma 9mm 124gr Envy to see how (and IF?) it performed (as advertized) and some Federal Punch 22lr because I wanted to try it out in both pistols & rifles as a possible carry option... And to see if it also performed as advertized?

That's about all the factory fodder I've purchased since Federal had their last, big $ale with Rebate$ on what I think they called their Black ammo line: it was around Christmas of 2019 and there was 9mm, 22lr, 380 & 45 acp at pretty good prices, with a rebate & even FREE $hipping maybe...?

Before THAT it was some 7x57 ammo, primarily for the brass to reload.

Remember WHEN you could buy some primered brass that even included the powder and a bullet (i.e., loaded ammo) for about a quarter (or two?) more per round than just the brass? Dem' days is long gone, unfortunately!:(

Large LE agencies often get it for the same price medium sized retailers get ammo. Winchester white box 9mm and 40s&w were about .23 a round delivered to our door last month.

I bought an awful lot of Perfecta 9mm at a local Walmart for $5.00/50 before it vanished.
I'm sure they didn't sell it below cost.

Don't forget the police departments who buy a years worth of ammo with one order. Someone I know who buys for a large PD said they were paying about 0.23/rd at the height of the insanity a year ago. That's about 1/3 of what it was selling for retail, if you could find it.

Keep in mind that ammo has passed through several hands before you pay at the register. Not all manufacturers sell direct to retailers. Most will sell to a wholesaler or distributor, who sells it to the retailer, who sells it to you. In the case of a mom and pop LGS it might have passed through a second distributor before reaching the store. I can tell you with a certain amount of insight that a big retailer like BassPro is making a 20-40% margin on every box. An online retailer has an advantage because they don't have as much overhead as BassPro, but then again they aren't necessarily getting the same wholesale pricing since BassPro places $billion dollar orders at a time. My guess is that $16.50/50 does not represent nearly as much profit as people might think.

Question - I see you are in the PacNW, did you actually get your Norma 124 gr. ammo? I just got so frustrated with Norma this AM about my case that never arrived. It was stuck in the FedEx Burlington WA facility for over 3 weeks.

Lots of phone calls and research about that facility (seems to be a black hole) and finally got Norma to recall the shipment, they got it back in their Georgia HQ in one week, while I couldn't get it delivered to my home (40 miles away from Burlington) in 3 weeks.

When they recalled it I requested that they ship the replacement order via UPS, they said (at the time) that they would, and they told me that they'd ship immediately, well...... they waited for the shipment to get back to Georgia and shipped the new case earlier today, and then called me.

After questioning the rep about this, I asked them to give me the UPS tracking number, and amazingly he said that they shipped via Fedex again...

Pretty dissapointed with them, I told them to cancel outright as it would just get stuck in the Burlington black hole again..... :(

Sorry for venting, hope your order didn't get stuck there as well.... This ultimately a Fedex issue, but Norma needs to insure their carrier's are meeting their requirements

As an aside, I did buy a couple 50 rd boxes of their 9mm just before Covid hit, bought it in Wenatchee, WA at $9.95/box, those were the days.... :)

I have no problem with anyone (other than an illegal monopoly) making a profit or charging what the market will bear.

Does anyone know the cost of brass and lead per 9mm cartridge. My guess is that it is a very small percent of the retail price (about $0.02 for 115 gr of lead + $0.04 for the brass in the case)
