What is your all time favorite military fighter jet?

I am surprised at all the F4 fans here. In its day it was the plane to beat. The longest serving fighter in the Air Force. It cannot be denied that it did well for the US, but I was glad to see it go.

The support equipment it required was old and broke a lot. Not having to calibrate some of those test sets anymore was music to my ears. Sorry, but that's the truth of it.

I'm surprised more people don't like the F-22. Sure it's expensive, but it's the most awesomest plane ever made. At this point I'd like to like the F-35 (JSF), but it still has too many problems.

YF-23 for the win. It follows the Spitfire principle. If it looks right, it is is right.

One difference I have noticed between the original YF-22 with the production version is how the wing planform evolved towards that of the YF-23.

A question for the F-4 guys. Wasn't the F-4 originally a single seat aircraft? Seems I remember that from when Mrs. Mac couldn't break the champiagn over the strip of metal at the christening when they gave the F-4 its name.

I like all the fighter jets. Some were good, some were not so good and some were great but I like them all.

Early studies and designs might have been single seat but none were ever built.

All previous McDonnell Aircraft planes has occult names including the Phantom I; Banshee, Demon, Voodoo... The F15 broke that tradition.

While I agree the P-51 with a Merlin sounds good An F-8-F Bear Cat with a huge Radial sounds even better!

You must understand that I am an OLD person and nothing is as sexy as a p-51 with a Merlin engine making a fly by. The plane and sound bring back memories of times past . I know you youngsters are about the super- duper jets

I like the F-15, I was on the flightline at Grand Forks ND in 1975 when they set the climbing records. I would like to have seen the Thunderbirds fly them.

I probably still have scars from "Phantom bites", working underneath F4s you were going to run into the corner of a door or panel sooner or later. I worked them for 3 years, engine mechanic, wasn't sorry to get off them.

They were here, too...

Far and away it would be the McDonnel-Douglas F-4 Phantom II. This is the only aircraft I have ever seen that, even tied down to the deck, looks like it is saying "I will kill you." Second place would be the Convair F-106 Delta Dart. That's what the Air Guard at the Jacksonville Airport flew. Always loved watching them kick in the afterburner for takeoff, especially when they flew at night.

....and I lived in the flight path at Charleston AFB. Got to watch them scramble and do touch and goes and have some good stories about what I saw like the pilot that took off and did aileron rolls until he was out of sight. And the one that almost ran over a small plane on final approach, I don't know how he realized that little plane was right under and in front of him but the pilot did an emergency pull up while the little plane rocked in its jet wash.:eek::eek:

Question to David

I used to live north of Plattsburgh as a kid and often remember coming out of the old Pyramid Mall and seeing a B-52 or something else flying overhead on take off. Sure was something for a 7-8 year old kid to see.

My trips to Plattsburg AFB were during the B-47 era. We always stayed in a hotel that had a bar called the Fife & Drum Room. If I remember correctly it was in the basement. Would you happen to know the name of the hotel? I have tried several times over the years to think of it but never can remember it?

Oh, by all means, the P-51 was a great plane and is my favorite, but I must refer you to the title of this thread. The venerable Mustang just can't be mentioned here as it's not a jet.

I have seen a couple turbo-prop P51s, they pulled them out of the boneyard for airshows at Davis-Monthan. They were in the competition when the A-10 was selected. They had a big 4 blade prop.

I believe that all the fighters that are or have been in the Air Force, (Navy, Marine Corp) are my favorite. The one closest to my heart goes back to WW II and Korea. The A1E, great ground support air craft. I know a few Vietnam Vets that may agree. A flight of 3 drop 3 napalm bombs along edge of our airfield and stopped some VC from over running us. The A-10 Is a pretty cool also. This mission of the Air Force is to control the sky.

OH BOY.....

Since A-10 is my favorite overall plane, but it's not exactly a fighter, I get to take all kinds of liberties with my list and of course expand it because everybody here knows I have too many favorite everythings and I'm just too darn indecisive to pick just one.

The F-80 with it's wing tanks is high on my list for overall looks.

The F-106 is up there too for reasons explained in an prior post.

The F-4 is my favorite Bomber-Fighter (note that my designation isn't Fighter/Bomber because it was a great bomber and a very good fighter. I think it unfortunate that the idea of multi-role aircraft makes planes that are jack of all trades but masters of none. The A-10 is a single purpose plane and boy does it shine.

.......a few more....
