What Is Your Zero?

Yeah, it all depends on your intended usage. This is what it's like where I live:

Longer shots aren't unreasonable. My eyes aren't good enough to use the different parts of the dot. So, I just put the dot on the target and I'm OK with being off an inch or two. With a scope though, I'll dial it in.

At 7 yards it will hit about 2" low. Or, if using an EOTech, the bottom of the circle will be dead on at 7 yards.

7 yards is well with-in handgun range. 7 yards is well with-in point and shoot range and too late to take an aimed shot with an AR. Point and shoot is/was part of our combat training for close quarters. Comes in real handy when "your" firebase is being over run.

I personally find that a 50m/y zero works great for 5.56/.223 (irons or red dot, don't have experience with scopes)

shooting off hand within 300m you will be real close to POA, a little high or a little low respectively, but you really don't have to put a ton of thought into it.

But at the end of the day, it's entirely your choice and there is no wrong answer!

Recently I was called out. Apparently I have bought a really not so good product (mediocre) and the 1MOA guarantee from the manufacturer is a joke and not doable with mediocre products.

Well, I took it as a challenge and I'm going to buy a scope and zero it at 100yds. Then I'll try my best to hit several 5-shot groups within a 1" circle. Without match grade ammo...

I'd hustle them a bit first and make them pay up.

You can teach a pistol shooter to shoot a rifle but it is hard teach a rifle shooter to shoot a pistol. A good rifle with a decent scope will do 1" with a 10 shot group in 223 @ 200 yards on a bench. If you cant do that with your ? you need to spend more money. U just got to wont to do it. I gave up drag racing to do this 30 years ago. Bushmaster 20" heavy barrel DCM is what I shot. Shoot with someone u cant beat makes u a better shot.

I'm not a pro and I consider myself only an average shooter. We'll see what I can do :)

Heck, I'm not a pro either. Had to lay off shooting for a long while, though its kind of like riding a bike. Was mostly a plinkster growing up, got some training in the military but that was mostly tactics, not shooting. All I care about, is being able to hit a realistic sized target, where I've been taught to shoot, when I need to shoot, with regular consistency. I'm not a match MOA shooter, etc.

But, you should be fine. The rifle is plenty accurate. If they doubt it, once you get it set up and everything, tell them to put their money where their mouth is and let the best shot, take a serious crack at it (though make sure his pride is on the line, or he'll screw you. ;) )

50 yard zero seems to work just fine for work out to 200 meters. I know the hold over in a pinch I also know the hold over to get to 300. Any farther than that and I'd rather have another rifle. Realistically in Western Washington that's about the farthest your going to be able to see anything due to bush and terrain.

I put a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40mm on the SWaMPy AR15 Sport. I zero'd the scope at 50 yards with 55 gr Federal ball. According to the balistics tables it should be dead on at 225 and easily on a silhouette out to 300.

Who needs info and pictures...real soon now..

I zero mine at 50, with the stock iron sights. Most of my shooting with this gun is at fairly close ranges - called predators, etc. I don't use my M&P15 for a 400-yard varmint gun. A 50 yd. zero with the .55 gr. ammo @ 3240fps, puts you at approximately +1 @ 100, +.5 @ 150, and -1.5 @ 200.
