I've only seen .22 Long for sale once. It was a few years ago at Scheels. Bought a couple boxes just for the heck of it. Will probably shoot them in my first gun, a Model 53A Springfield.
Guess I'll vote for .22 Long Rifle.

Now that I've got a Henry .22 pump action rifle coming in, it'll shoot shorts, longs and LR therefore, I'll be happy with any of those three.

As for actual preference, I don't know yet. I've only ever shot LR. All of my .22 weapons up to this point, have been semi-autos that were LR specific.

Federal 510. That's a 40-grain solid, lead, round nose, .22LR.
I find that they are the best all-around ammunition for my rifles, pistols, and revolvers.

I am not a "hoarder", because if I can't find that, I don't buy it.
I am very particular. :o

I use .22 LRs in my rifles and Advantage Arms .22 conversion for my Glock. It's picky on what works well and I doubt .22 longs--if even found--would work in it. Mini-Mag RNs works beast for me.

22 Long was an extended version of the 22 Short with the same bullet. Some guns were made just for the 22 Long but that was a "long" time ago.
The 22lr uses the 22 Long case with a heavier bullet in most cases. Some of the high speed ammo uses a lighter bullet but 40gr for a 22LR is standard.

At one time the 22 Long was easy to get but I havent seen any for some time.

I had a cheap version of a single action 22 revolver years ago that was just not accurate. Until I tried the 22 Long in it. Was the only thing that shot well in it. It was marked 22LR.

I voted .22LR but only because my Henry levergun loads those best. In reality I like .ss Shorts for my Ruger Single-Six because for some reason they are extremely accurate in that revolver. Like said above, I have not seen .22L ammo is a very long time but I have seen plenty of shorts.

What's the best ammo to break in a new Smith Wesson 22c A?
CCI mini mags, high velocity, copper round nose? Or will something else work just as well?
Thanks in advance for any information.

In today's environment, anything you can find will be just fine. I'm not a big believer .22LR pistols need to be broken in. If an ammo feeds well it's all good IMO.

Only complaints about shorts...

The only complaint I've heard about shorts is that they are fine in revolvers but caused some feed/jam probs in tubular magazines. The probably isn't true across the board.

I have an 1890 Winchester pump rifle chambered in .22 long.
It won't chamber a .22LR.and wouldn't feed them without modifying the chamber and carrier. I buy CCI .22 longs when I find them. They make runs of the longs, I have a few boxes stashed so I can shoot the old girl occasionally.
All my other rifles are chambered in .22 LR. That's what I shoot the most of...when I can find it that is!

A manually fed bolt, pump or lever rifle with .22LR chambering will shoot and often feed both the .22 Long and .22 short as the power of the cartridge isn't needed to operate the action like it is in a semi auto. The .22 Long has all but disappeared in the market place leaving shorts and long rifle as the only regular available .22 ammo.

Could not have said it any better myself!

The 22 Long has a little more accuracy in my old Winchester pump than the low or high vel. shorts for some reason. May be due to being closer to the rifling, maybe?

LR is sub-sonic also works as well as some of the 1200 fps offerings.

I always keep my eyes peeled for Longs and buy them if I can find them but they are like finding hens teeth.

I do have to say that a standard 22 in any length is a lot easier on the wallet than a...........

22 Magnum that I shoot in the Ruger single six revolver !!

no vote.... I use them all.

Many, many years ago, I was 'commissioned' by several of our neighbors to thin out the bunnies munching on their vegetable gardens. Using lawn mowing money, I'd just become the proud owner of a new Savage Mdl 24, so I jumped at the chance to help pay for the ammo.

I think I used the .410 barrel only a few times. Mostly, I shot .22 short which cost 20 cents/box. 22 Long was 30 cents a box and LR were 40 cents. I could pop a bunny with a 22 short at half the cost of using a LR. Plus, it was much quieter....much less likely to disturb Mr. Johnson drinking his morning coffee.

Hmmm.....in 57 years, prices have changed some, eh?

BTW, I still have that Mdl 24.

My Remington 552 uses Shorts, Longs, or Long Rifles.
That said, the only Longs I've ever used were CB Longs, because they're quiet from a rifle.
Now that I have a Benjamin Marauder .22, I don't use a rimfire for quiet critter killing.

Once in a while In the past I have purchased .22 lr ammo, when it was cheap and always in stock, that did not work very well in my .22lr semi auto pistols. Usually the only pistol the ammo would function in was my model 41.

I usually reserved this ammo for my Colt Diamondback revolver which I just can not believe how much they are going for in .22 LR...
