what kind of critter is this that just ate me up?

Sucked one down my throat at a Fourth of July party one time.
Stung inside my throat about the Adam's apple. Bee was attracted to the CO2 emitting from beer breath. Another case of shoulda been listening instead of talking. Big dose of Benadryl and close watch for airway swelling. Sucked big time... end of the party for me.

Do a super nest search.... been all over the news here lately.

I'm deathly allergic to the Yellow Jackets.

HATE THEM !

Permethrin dust, or liquid, down the hole, will give you 100% kill.

BUT, only AFTER DARK, when they are all home.

If you do it in day time, you can get whacked badly.

After treating a hole with liquid, we found a large number of queen Yellow Jackets, trying to escape the poison, they were huge, and almost black. Didn't know they made so many queens, in the fall.

Late summer/early fall, is when they will very aggressively defend the nest.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh yellow jackets AKA the a-holes of the insect world. Ground hornets is what we call them. They tore up my grandfather many years ago when he drove the lawn mower over a nest. We were pulling out a bateau from a mud bank and at the last moment right before we ran over the hole we saw the nest. That boat sat there for quite a while before we could work up the nerve to QUICKLY push it off into the water again and find some other place to pull out :D

They normally have ground nest but can build a "Gray" colored
tree nest
or like this year............
inside my cabin roof and the inside the gas BBQ that in the back patio in South Lake Tahoe.

Found out they had a nest inside the BBQ, the hard way.
Never saw them coming out of it, when I bumped into it and disturbed them.

It does not take much to piss them off and get them flying around their nest.
The welt on my rib side got purple and larger than a golf ball
and yes it stung for a pretty long time.
Best thing to do is run like the dickens to give them space !!

Two cans of RAID solved the problem the next day. :D

PS;
and yes, they do eat meat..............

Oh baby it could be my fermone attractant? I never wear it in the woods because Mrs bigfoot might carry me off. Lmao.

No seriously my wife and dil was walking the dog and they both got bit out of nowhere. I told them there's a ground nest there, they stepped on it. What's up with the bees there on the edge this year?

Be aware of white faced hornets. The first one bites you and leaves a scent that the whole nest comes after you. So after that first bit run forest run.
Lol
