Hey all,

I found this pic of an Airweight J online the other day and it looked unusual because it had a longer barrel. No info was given about it at all. I copied the pic cause I knew I could come here and get the skinny on it.

The reason I am doing it is that I like it and I wouldn't mind having one like it.

Thanks all.

I'm currently looking in an old S&W catalog dated 2010 and on page 36 I see a Model 637, product number 162522, Airweight with a 2.5 inch barrel, weight of 16 oz.

Chambered for .38 Special +P, this variation of J frame is listed as new for 2010. The catalog says it has a stainless cylinder, alloy frame. The barrel appears to me to be stainless one piece. Also came in a 638 (Bodyguard Model 49 style) and a 642 (Model 40 style) version.

Very nice gun, I hope you get yourself one, the extra barrel length will give you some extra velocity, and the extra weight of the barrel should help tame recoil of +P rounds.

Now that is too cool. That didn't take you guys long at all. I knew you all would get it for me.

I'd like to see the other 2 brothers to this one, the 638 and 642. Any pics of those hanging around?

Lastly, how rare are these versions? Are they so rare that they would be commanding M27 3 1/2 or 696 type prices or would it be a slight premium on standard new J frame pricing?

Thanks all.

As soon as I saw this 642-2 at my LGS I traded in my 1 7/8ths inch 642-1. The pinned black front sight and extra 3/4 inch of barrel make it much easier to shoot. Need a new photo, as it now wears Hogue blue/black G10 grips.
