I went to the range today with a few guns and my AR-15. Went to the sign-in counter. "What are you shooting?", the guy asked. ".223.", I said, knowing that I had to buy ammo from them. "I have to see it.", he said. "See what?", I asked. "Your rifle." "Whhhhaaaaa....????". He said, "I have to check if you have an illegal stock." "Weeeell, ok", I said, What exactly are you looking for?" He answered, "(some kind of) braces." I said, "I don't even know what one looks like." He examined the rifle and squinted. I asked, "What are you looking at the would make it illegal?" He pointed to the rail that guides the collapsing stock . "That right there." There was a lady there and he asked her, "What do you think?" "Hmmm, I don't know", she said. Another guy came up and they asked him, "I'm not sure", he said. So he picks up the rifle and takes it to the back to the owner. He came back out and said, "It's ok." "Great", I replied, I can't wait to get home and tell my forum buddies about THIS one."

I suppose that we are going to see more and more crazy **** as time goes by.

Oh, believe me it happened around 1:00 pm today. You couldn't make this stuff up. And I had two guys with me as witnesses.

You have really got me on that one. I guess the scenario would be that BATF would raid the place and find a customer using something that 'kinda looked a little like it MIGHT be' a pistol brace and fined them and myself heavily and took us all to the slammer, where maybe we could be bailed out pending court dates.

Do you see the little rail under the stock tube?? THAT'S what the guy was pointing at.

The funny thing is that they didn't ask me if I had the $200 'permission slip' to have such a thing. Again, the pistol brace in the article looks NOTHING like my stock. Why and when they started doing this, I haven't a clue.

Its nice of them to try and make trouble for their customers and all, but if a range asked to check my guns to see if they were legal, I'd politely decline, leave and never return. Not before sharing some wisdom with them first, though.

Just about every adjustable AR stock has that little rail. If someone told them to look for that, the politest thing I can say is that they were poorly advised.

...that the people at the counter had no idea what they were looking for. They must have had a 'briefing' that morning from the boss who did not 'brief' them very well at all. I was probably the first 'victim'.

Somehow, and it might not just be paranoia, they think that they will be held liable for somebody using something illegal. They didn't ask if I had a suppressor in my bag or maybe a vertical front grip. Good thing I didn't have a thumbhole stock.

The policy at that range would’ve prompted some hurtful comments from me on my way out the door. What’s even more disturbing is that the employees of the range couldn’t tell the difference between a collapsible stock and a brace. Imagine how confused they would be if you brought in a Mini 14 with a side folding stock.

Occasionally someone at the club I am president of will ask me what they should do if they see someone shooting a gun with a brace, or a suppressor, or a barrel they think is too short. I always tell them they should mind their own business.
