I pick up my MP 15-22 today, and want a Red Dot sight for it; I see most of you are using risers on your rails. What height riser do you have?

I have the MOE version so i have the back up sights - wonder if 1/2 is high enough

Please chime in so I can get an idea. Pictures and type of riser and scope would also be helpful.

Depending on type of red dot and mounts that are available when buying it, you may not need to specifically buy a riser. For example, a lot of Aimpoint clones can be bought with the co-witness (or 1/3 co-witness) cantilever mounts. Take a look at the rrages.com and primaryarms.com sites for examples and info.

The SightMark reflex I have on mine co-witnesses perfectly with the iron sights without a riser.

If you can tell us what kind of RD sight you're thinking about, there's probably someone 'round here that can provide first-hand info for that hardware

This is the "Cantilever Scope Mount" RRages sells. Fits their Aimpoint clones perfectly and co-witnesses with the iron sights. No need to fold the iron sights.

The dot is more effective in several ways when as far forward as you can mount it.

Thanks, Moto. I'm new to this so I appologize if this next question doesn't make sense. I've never owned a red dot. I've read mention of co-witnessing. Could someone explain that, please? I have a PA M4 coming (man, do they fill orders fast!).

From what I've read it sounds like that setup does not require an additional riser. When M4 is installed, it looks like vision through the rear sight is blocked. True? If so, when looking through the red dot is the objective to have the dot on the top of the center post once it's sighted in?

The PA M4 does not require a separate riser, the riser is built in to the mount you get from PA. Some folks pull the riser out, but that's another story.

As for blocking the rear sight, you are not blocked, you are seeing the sight path between the rear and front iron sights right through the red dot sight.

A lot of folks intentionally want the red dot and iron sights to be co-witnessed so the dot appears right on top of the front post. Do a search on co-witness in this forum and you'll get a lot of great info and detailed answers to your questions.

I took the Trueglo red-green dot off my son’s AR and put it on my MP15-22 fits perfect no riser needed, it co witness with the front MBUS on the MOE version. MP 15-22

He said he would trade me for a cheaper Holographic sight – isn’t their a fake Eotech?

Yes there are Eotech clones, here's just one example:

In my experience, the fake Eotechs are pretty low end on the quality scale and besides the whole point of the eotech is that it is holographic and the clones are simple red dots. The reticle emitter is visible when looking at it downrange, too. It is kind of a "poser" thing and you will end up throwing it in the safe never to be seen again.

In fact I have one that I will send you, free, just to get it out of my safe.

You should get a decent quality red dot in an Aimpoint style. I have an M3 and gen1 and gen2 micro from PA. They are all 3 quality optics.

I have the M3 on my .223 AR with a 5X magnifier behind it in a PA flip to side mount and troy flip BUIS.

My 15-22 has a Real EoTech 512 and Aimpoint 3X on a removable mount.

Here is a bonus image of my AR-15 with Viridian Laser hanging from a guitar wall mount.
The guitar mount "grabs" the buttstock when you release the weight of the rifle, making it
impossible for it to be "knocked" off the wall or just grabbed. You have to lift the weight
off of the mount before the rifle/guitar can be removed.

What grip is that? I know I've seen it before, but cant remember the brand or model name of it. Yet again, I thought my rifle "was finished", but now I got to get that grip to go along with the newly ordered stuff thats on its way now. A new tactical light, scope riser and sunshade for my scope. Seems I'll have to reupload all new pics of it lol. GREAT looking rifle you got there man!

That wouldnt make it for sure a Magpul, just because of a stock. As things can get switched around at the users whims lol. Im asking about the grip on the first set of pictures. Not the 15 22. You lost me on the "its stock on the MOE version" As acording to the S&W site this is a TOTALLY differnt grip anyway. I am in no way trying to be rude, its jsut the link has a diffent grip pictured, so Im trying to figure it out lol

I think we somehow got things mixed up, as I am not talking about your gun. That is a nice set up you have so far, im talking about the gun and its pictures I have in my other quote. LOl you werent the only one confussed. It took me a while to figure out that we were both right lol.. just on 2 different subjects lol. I STILL wanna know what grip that is on the other quote I have with the pictures in it?

My rifle (15-22) didn't come stock with the magpul sights, so that is a Red Herring.

The M&P15-22 has the CAA G-27 The M&P15 has CAA UPG16 with the replaceable front and rear straps. I have to tell you, I like the CAA pistol grips better than anything else I have ever tried. You feel anchored to the rifle.

Either one is good for a hamfisted guy like me, but the UPG16 lets you get your grip "just right".
