I was born in 1961 and want to buy a S&W revolver built that year for some reason. What models were available then?

I currently reload .38 Special for my Ruger GP-100 (sorry, I know this is a S&W Forum!) so a S&W that shoots .38 Special built in 1961 would fit the bill just great.

Hi,

Lets see in a 38 special: Model 10, 15, 64 and 67 in the K frame platform. Model 36 in the J frame. In the 357 that can shoot 38s: Model 13,19,65 and 66 in the K frame platform. The bigger N frame 357: Model 27 and 28.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your replies guys.

I am not a collector, so the box and accessories are not important to me. What should I expect to pay for a "less than pristine" K frame with no box but in good shape? I would prefer a 4" barrel.

Thanks again.

I purchased two 19-3's, a 4" and a 6", this year under $400.00. Locally I see 15's usually run a little higher and the few 14's have been much higher. I plink with 38 specials in both 19's. No problems and both are accurate.

For an average 4" model 10 (K frame, fixed sights) about $300 or so...except you live in CA, where you can't buy a 1961 production gun unless you can find one already in the state. You could also wait 1 year, when such a gun would turn 50 years old and could be brought in from out of state - just be sure you can prove it is at least 50 years old.

Don't forget J frames were made in 1961 also.

With a little shopping around, you should be able to find a Model 10 4-inch somewhere in the $250-$375 range. The higher figure should get you a pretty nice specimen. The lower figure would probably be something in sound shooting condition, but with lots of "character." According to my Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson you are looking for a serial number starting at C474149 up to probably C550000. Could be a 10-2 or 10-3, and maybe a 10-1. There are those here who are much more knowledgeable than I, and hopefully they will speak up if I have mis-stated something. That is what I decipher from SCSW.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Now I have a lot more information to help me on my quest.

I had not considered the 50 year old aspect of bringing a gun in from out of state. That will give me more options next year.

Thanks again.

Every once in a while I pull out my 1960 Stoeger book which had the full S&W line listed with prices. Just about everything but the .44 Magnum and the Combat Magnums were under $100. Still big bucks, but the quality was great.

Practically brings tears to my eyes.
