What scotch for birthday?

I've been spending time with these two and right now the TALISKER gets the nod.

Look what Santa brought me today.

... Laphroig single malt, I consider the best that I've ever drank, very smooth.

Laphroaig is a phantastic Islay malt, but I think "smooth" is the ONE thing it has never been accused of .... ;)

If you want a great Scotch whisky that won't break the bank try Monkey Shoulder. It is malted blend (all single malts with no grain whisky like a regular blend) For those that enjoy Balvenie you will be right at home with Monkey Shoulder. Another bottling that may be hard to find in some areas are the Grangerstone bottling. The 18 year old is fantastic and won't break the bank. These are both under the radar whiskies which helps to keep the price down.

My regular go to Scotch in the winter is Highland Park (avoid the new Magnus bottling, it is young and thin). It is very well balanced with enough peat which I enjoy on cold winter night. Johnny Walkers new Double Black is also good and also nicely peated. They double the amount of Taliskers in the blend from the regular Black Label.

And to you bourbon guys...you do know that bourbon is just the liquid they put in new oak barrels to get them ready to build good Scotch whisky.

Instead of buying one bottle of scotch I suggest having a friend take you to a place that offers many different single malt scotch whiskies. Try a flight of different ones. No matter who suggests, "This is the best one I've ever tasted," you might not care for it then you're stuck with a bottle your friends might not like, either. Another option is to buy one of the many Advent Calendar samplers so you can try 24 different ones.

Here's a saloon (closed two years ago) that offered 86 single malts.

Happy Birthday!

I'm not suppose to drink but my Finnish imported liquor filled chocolate candy is awesome. I'm waiting for the Russian congnac filled chocolates to get here, I'm like looking for the ups guy.

There are a lot of discussions here of both blended and single malt scotch. Big difference. Both in price and palate.

I would suggest a Balvenie for an introduction. Hard to beat, and it is a single malt. I always have a bottle on hand for those who want a first try at scotch.

All those blends are what our fathers drank on the way to Normandy. Good then, still good, but single malts are a step above.

The beverage depicted isn't exactly Scotch, but it was distilled nearby in the Appalachian highlands by persons of Scots-Irish descent.

By the way, it isn't sold in fifths, or in 750 ml bottles. Quart mason jars, as show, are the preferred means of packaging for retail distribution.

Scotch is meant to be sipped, not guzzled. Give me a good single malt Scotch over a (very) little ice. No water , soda or anything else. Sip it as the ice melts.

For the relative cost, I like Glenlivet, at least 12 years old. There are better, but they can cost considerably more. If you have never had Scotch before, you may ask why so many folks like it. It is different. Some say it is an acquired taste. I found it fairly easy to acquire...

I'm getting a bit chilled. I may have to see what I have to warm me up.

When I did drink it was shots and beers. 15 double shots to one beer. I figured I'd get where I'm going fast. Lol

We are the same age. My suggestion? GLENLIVET single malt. 12 or 15 year...makes no difference. ;)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

My favorite is Chivas Regal Gold Signature 18yo, a fifth about $84.00. Next The Famous Grouse, a fifth about $22.00. These are both a blended scotch. Whatever you choose stop drinking after you start to keel over!
