What should I get next?

I got my M&P 9c last year and it's been working out ok. I've only used it for range shooting and HD because I'm concerned it might be bulky to CC.

So, I was thinking of getting an M&P Shield for CC (If I can ever find one)

Beyond that, I was thinking of maybe a Glock 19 (please don't hit me over the head for this one, I do like that gun). Problem is I don't know what it's purpose would be other than 2nd range gun.

Also, again, just thinking... if I could get my hands on an AR, should I get one? I'll admit I'm not a rifle guy but if I could get one for a reasonable price maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea. This one would be for HD as well.

I carry my 9c everyday with out issue. I would spend my money on holsters if I were you until you find one you like, then just practice drawing, shooting, and make necessary adjustments to your wardrobe to accommodate your new lifestyle choice. Nothing wrong with the Glock 19, but a full size M&P mag with xgrip is a lot cheaper, even at the crazy prices they are going for today.

The Shield is thinner than the Glock 19 but with the 8 round mag the grip is just as long

I looked at the 9c but it seems to be about the same size as my Glock 26. I ended up buying the FS M&P 9

That being said I do like the way the M&P series sits in my hand so I'll probably end up with a compact at some point

I'm not really a rifle guy as well but over the past 2 months I have gotten 2 ARs After carrying one in Bagram for 6 months the last thing I thought I'd be buying was an AR. I hated lugging tht thing everywhere I went lol. But times and events have changed so that helped in my decision to get a couple of them

To answer your last question first, you're not going to find a reasonably priced AR any time soon. Re:9c being bulky. The only time I've found that to be an issue is in the summer, shorts and t-shirt weather. I agree with treiz, find a decent holster. I use a Crossbreed Supertuck when carrying my 9c.

One thing mentioned to me after I got my first M&P9 FS and was looking for something for cc was interoperability. With or without the xgrip you can use the same mags in a 9 FS or 9c. There's certainly a benefit to that in certain situations.

Beyond hand guns...you can't go wrong with an 870, an AR and in my case a Ruger mini 14 ranch rifle so I can shoot .223 and 5.56 with two rifles.

All of it makes it easy when purchasing ammo. Don't have to worry about if I have enough in way too many calibers.

I think carry comfort is paramount when it comes to whether or not you will carry as often as you personally want. It's one thing to decide not to carry based on reasons personal to you. It's a whole other thing if you have made the overall decision to carry; but, decide not to do so on any given day because your weapon is too uncomfortable to carry. Posters above are correct. A good holster can make all the difference in the world. There simply is no doubt that a single stack (or stack and 1/2 like shield) is much more comfortable to carry than a double stack. There are a number of single stacks out there that would fit the bill. Ruger LC9, Kahr CM9/CW9, Walther PPS and Shield all come to mind because they are all guns that I currently own. I have several double stacks including the M&P 9s and the G19. My daily carry is the Walther PPS. It (and the other single stacks I listed) just carry so much more comfortably that it is almost unnoticeable compared to the double stacks. In answer to your first question, yes, by all means, get a Shield. It is an awesome gun and an outstanding carry piece.

In answer to your second question, get an AR if you want. You say you're not a rifle guy. Then I say, do you want to be? If so, yes, get one. If you are buying an AR just because it seems to be the thing to do and it will make you sacrifice the other pistol or something else you want, then no, don't buy one. I have 3. Personally, I think a shotgun is better for home defense than an AR. I bring that up because you could get a pretty nice and functional home defense shotgun and handgun (maybe two or three handguns) for the price you have to shell out for an AR right now.

Just some food for thought for you.

Shields are great IF you can find one. FS 9 would be better. The mags will fit the 9c. HD would be a 12 guage shotgun. The AR,s are great but NOT the best HD. You don't want to shoot up the neighbors fridg or water heater from inside your house and they are WAY WAY WAY over priced right now,plus ammo is hard to find and a small fortune to buy. Mags are also priced off the planet.

I have the 9c and carry it in a galco king-tuk. No problems Its not much larger or heavier than the shield and holds more rounds and can use full size mags. I can conceal it with just a t-shirt with the king-tuk.

Consolidate and simplify.
I have two Glock 19's and a Glock 26. They all take 15, 17, and 33 round mags.

I of course have other guns, but I try to consolidate on them as well.
Like 1911's all in .45 acp. Multiple AR's, and Garands.

I'm down to:

9MM
.45 acp
.44 Mag/Special
30-06
5.56
45-70
12 GA

To me there is no sense in buying both M&P's and Glocks. One or the other, and ones that you can use common mags between them.

Thank you all so much for your input! I'll try to address your questions/comments.

First off, yes, I should try out some holsters for my 9c. If I can use my HD gun as a CC as well then awesome. I was just thinking that it might be bulky as I have a small/medium frame and wonder if an IWB would just look odd. This is just perception and not based on any real fact.

Also, I should say that CC is something I would be "trying out" since I've never done it before. It makes me a little nervous but I also think that since I have my CPL, why not? On more fact, my employer doesn't allow guns in the workplace so this would be purely when I'm on my own time.

No, I am not a rifle guy because I currently have no rifles. I don't have an aversion to them I just don't feel like I have enough knowledge of them. I am really only considering this category for SHTF scenarios. Also, considering the wacky political climate I'm wondering if it's now or never. That said, I'm not interested in paying 2-3x just because these guns are in high demand so I'm likely to pass unless I get a lucky deal.

As for the Glock 19, I feel like this is the gun that got away. When I took my handgun safety class I was very much considering it. In fact, I was going to get it after the M&P 9c I was test firing "bit" me (loading the mag got me on my hand). But ultimately I realized I should have been paying more attention and found the Smith & Wesson much more classy looking so I went with it anyway. I still love it but, like I said, I do like the 19.

Yes, I have considered revolvers and 1911s and no, I haven't ruled them out. They are on my list of possibilities and thank you for your suggestion. Shotgun? Probably not. I know it's uses but I see shot in a crisis situation as being very messy and way overkill for my living arrangement.

I can't afford to have multiple guns of the same type. So I have a 686, a rifle and a shotgun. I'd like a semi auto pistol and a lever gun. Don't get me wrong, I could stray from this rule.

Take a look at the Crossbreed Holsters. I recently got one of the Super Tuck ones for my 9c and love it. I am testing out all of their clip types to see which one(s) I like best. I have only tried out a couple of different holsters so far but probably won't be trying out anymore since this thing is so awesome. I am buying one of the Micro Clip versions for my Kahr PM9 to try out. Awesome quality holster and very comfortable. One very cool thing about Crossbreed is that they give you two weeks to try the holster out and if you don't like it they will let you do a one time exchange for another holster type of theirs or they will buy it back from you all together. Can't beat that deal!

My thinking. OP says he is not a rifleman. That's OK. If he is a pistol shooter, then he needs a revolver. A good revolver will be helpful in determining and working on his level of marksmanship. I don't think one can really do this with an M&P or other service-grade autoloader. Look into something like a high-quality .357 revolver with adjustable sights. (Model 586/686). A K22 would be a great choice. (Model 17/617, Model 18, etc.) If the OP is just a gun toter and is not really interested in marksmanship, then that is another matter.

I would not rush out to buy an AR if it was necessary to pay a ridiculous price to do so. ARs are nice rifles but unless you are an aspiring target shooter that needs a match rifle, there are other long guns that serve well enough for defense purposes. Hang back and see what happens before you rush out and pay a crazy price.
