The Capitol, drive to San Antonio (an hour south) and visit the Missions, especially the Alamo, drive north to Waco and visit the Texas Ranger Museum. Visit Sixth Street if you like to have a few or watch people who do.

Camp Mabry Texas Military Museum, on the West see of Austin

National Museum of the Pacific War, 2 hours west in Fredericksburg

Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, LBJ Library and more good food and music than you can check out on a short stay. Check with AFD,APD,UTPD or any municipal employee [ not a frat boy or hipster ] for help in finding the good spots-they won't be advertised much if any. The many food trailers and carts are a good, safe and affordable place to eat. A little bit of 6th St goes a long way as far as I'm concerned. PM me if you need info while there,if I can't help I know people that can.

If you like half-price books, they have some of the best ones in the country. Pretty landscape, lots of good restaurants and bars. The Town Lake/university/capitol area has an unlimited supply of very attractive women. My favorite regional restaurant is a chain called Chuy's which used to be excellent, but has weakened some with quick growth but it is still tasty. Nearby Bastrop probably has more gunshops and ranges, Austin proper is the most liberal part of Texas. Enjoy! Rick

The motto for Austin is "Keep Austin Weird". You can probably find anything and everything there. Stubb's B-B-Q is worth checking out.

Got to have a steak at McCluskey's, best garliced mashed taters I ever ate in a restraunt. Steak is more than good. Threadgill's at Congress and Riverside for lunch. The Ranger muesuem in Waco is an all day affair. The Missions in San Antonio. Check the paper and if the Junior League is having their Christmas Market at that time, try to make it. Vendors from all over the southwest are there. if you are a blues person, the Stevie Ray Vaughn Memorial in Zilcher Park is worth seeing. In the evening go down to the I-35 bridge across the river and watch the bats takeoff for their evening flight. Thousands of them leave at the same time, quite impressive.
