I'm looking at a 17-3 from an online seller. I don't have pictures yet.

The description says custom wood grips excellent condition.
If the pictures check out what should I offer? He's looking to get $575 for it.

Thanks in advance

That's kind of hard to say. Custom wood grips could mean some cheap after markets or some original Ropers.
But with the info we have and knowing they are not original to the gun I'd offer $500 if the gun is in excellent condition. MHO.

bamabiker gave you good advice. Condition is everything, if the bluing is not all worn off, and it is tight, that's what counts. Assuming this will be a shooter, not a collection piece, a little wear is expected. The pictures should be able to tell you if it was well cared for. Custom grips could be anything, Sile thumb-rest grips could have been had for about $20, or custom Sanderson's or Ropers might have been a couple hundred. It is sometimes difficult to buy through the internet. Get lots of pictures.

My Favorite LGS just picked up a 98% condition 6 inch 17-3 circa 1977. Full target with original walnut target stocks and box. No tools or papers. I can get it for $650 OTD. Darn taxes and property insurance are due. Debating on layaway. The high condition 17's are still out there.
