What was the First Gun you purchased for yourself?

My first gun purchase was a Ruger stainless 4" Security Six that I bought in 1977. I wanted a S&W M66 but couldn't find one and they were too expensive anyway. I still have that Ruger and its as good as the day I got it.

My first gun was a Japanese Type 38, 6.5mm rifle one of the guys had brought back from the islands after the war and stuck in a closet.

I can't remember what I paid for it, but it was somewhere around $9.00. In the 50s, no one wanted them and they were widely considered "junk" and/or "unsafe."

I learned to detail strip the rifle and bolt and loved it more that any other gun in the home.

So, of course, as the madness began, I sold it, bought something else, sold it, bought .... And, here I am today!

First handgun I paid for was a Taurus Model 96 .22 LR, basically a Model 17 knock-off. I paid, Dad did the paperwork.

First handgun I paid for AND did my own paperwork for was the S&W 19-3 I bought at the Oshman's in Houston on the day I turned 21.

Still have them both.

The frist handgun I purchased was a Springfield Armory M1911A1 National Match. My father was a gun trader and got in on a smoking deal with a local shop for four of these. I paid him a few bucks now and then beacause I was a poor high school kid. The bad thing was out of the box it was a lemon in a way. Couldn't pull back the slide with out the help of a block and tackel. We sent it back to SA and it was fixed and the did a action job on it for nothing. I still have this gun and always will. Shoots better then me!

1st purchase, a Model 57-1 with 6" barrel at the px on Ft Richardson AK. Oh and they were closing out all the Colt's ie Diamondbacks and DS at cost but I wanted a Smith

In 1963 I purchased a Winchester model 250 .22 with my grass cutting money. It was my twelfth birthday and I remember it costing me less than sixty bucks with a brick of .22 long rifles thrown in. The Marlin 39 ran about 90.00 bucks so I had to get the Winchester, I couldn't afford the Marlin and nobody in their right mind would just "GIVE" their child the extra money, you worked for it or you went without. The 250 lasted several thousand rounds until the pot metal receiver finally hammered itself apart. I sent it to the factory for repairs in 1968 and they returned it in like new condition. I gave it to my kid brother in the late 70's and he used it until the receiver started to fatigue again. He traded it to some neighbor kid for a single shot. 22 hornet. Two weeks ago I FINALLY bought a vintage Marlin 39-A at the gun show, virtually unfired. I had to pay 500.00 bucks but it's worth it! If I were computer literate I'd post pics.

My first was the Remington 77, the magazine fed version of the Nylon 66. 1986, K-Mart, Shawnee, OK, I think it was ~$80. It was on sale, and I had to drag Mom along to fill out the paperwork.

First handgun was a Ruger P-85. A co-worker was selling it for his sister. Husband had been a gunsmith. He died, so Mikey sold his guns for her. From what I've heard about other P-85s, he did some nice work on mine.

When I was 12 or so I put a used Marlin .22 bold action rifle with detachable 7 round magazine on lay away at Western Auto. Took me a month or so to save up the $15.00 to buy it. Still own the rifle and youngest son used it to qualify for his hunting license a few years back.

Wow, this takes me back... to the early 1970s.

It was a Ruger Mk I 22 automatic. A friend on mine was selling it, and I asked him "how much?" he said... I dunno, 35 or 40 dollars. I told him, OK, how about this... 37 dollars and a beer.

We went to the local convenience store for the beer, and the deal was complete.

But wait, there's more.

We ended up moving to different places, and went into different careers. We didn't really see each other for about 20 years. Eventually I found out he was a general contractor as well as a gun collector. When we finally got back together, he wanted to buy the Ruger back. I said sorry, I'm going to keep it.

Years after THAT, I hired him to do a major remodeling of the kitchen in my house. He did a great job, and it was nice to see him again.

When the job was complete, and paid for, I told him there was still some unfinished business. I met him at his house, and gifted him the Ruger, along with the extra magazine and cheap leather holster he had sold me almost 30 years earlier. I prepared a letter detailing all the gift/transfer details for his records, explaining that some things, like a life-long friendship are beyond the price of a gun.

His wife cried like a baby.

He told me, "You never know. I will probably end up giving this gun to MY SON, and sometime in the future, it could come back to YOUR son."

Kinda cool.

Best wishes everyone.

The first rifle I bought myself was a Rossi .22 pump and I still have it. It' a great little rifle. My first pistol was a S&W 910 9mm.

Smith and Wesson 686 with 6 in. barrel. Still have her after 20 yrs. Shoots just as great as when I first bought her.

I traded my grandfathers's Marlin pump 12 guage "thumbbuster" and $15 for a NIB Chief's Special 38 in 1973.

Only the slightest twinge of regret for trading the shotgun. I never liked it very well.

My first gun is this Colt Delta Elite I purchased on Jan. 19, 1991, the day I was sworn in as a U.S. citizen:

A SMLE jungle carbine orderd out of a magazine in 1963 $19.95 & S&H. (about $2 I think)

Arrived in almost new cond. packed in cosmoline. I still have it, I fired one 10 rd. mag through it. The rubber recoil pad may have done SOME good in 1945 but by 1965 OUCH! (now it feels hard as a rock)

Mine was/is a Springfield 45-70 with 'sporterized' stock and full length barrel. I was about 11, maybe 10, when I saw it in an antique shop and traded a l-o-o-s-e no-name 12 Gauge damascus double bbl for it plus $5.00.

The 45-70 is visible to me as I type this. It likes [or used to...]a 400 gr lead bullet over some surplus 4831 powder.

Dyson

Colt M1911 Series 70 Mark IV .45acp. Bought it from a little shop in Oak Lawn, Illinois in 1979. I paid right around $244 for it. I've had it ever since.

Carried it in Korea, and occasionally as a pay officer at Fort Knox. It was my primary self-defense gun until I bought my Glock 22 when they were first introduced. It's now my bullseye wadcutter gun with a slide mounted 1" UltraDot.
