What was your first new-bought S&W revolver?

I've never bought a new S&W.

Have bought some that were "LNIB" and 20or more years old but never a current production item.

My first brand new S&W was the 617, when they first appeared. I got one with a 4 digit sn, 6" barrel, still have it and it's my son's favorite handgun. So, I suppose I know where that one will wind up someday. I suppose I bought that thing in about 198?? or maybe 1990?

The 617 came out in 1989.

At that time all Smith & Wessons were using the Three Alpha Four Numeric serial number pattern . . . ABC1234

48 year ago I bought a 4" kit gun new and a model 60 new. Had to pay a 50% premium for the model 60, they were that hard to get. That pushed the price up to $165.00. Still got both.

This Model 19-4 was my first new S&W:

In 1963 i purchased my uniforms and firearm to begin my 40 year career In Law Enforcement, a Model 19 from George Cake Co. Berkeley Ca. The price of the pistol was $82.57 out the door. Later that day I was uniformed and riding with the Sgt. the next evening I appeared for the midnight shift, the Sgt turned the phones to the SO and locked the PD telling me someone would relieve me at 0800 the next morning. That city is now 125,000.

To this day, I have never owned a brand new S&W Revolver! Have purchased close to new, but that is as close as I get! I am OK with that. Bob

Model 29 in 1978. It was Harry Callahan's fault. Yes, I still have it.

Mine was a Model 60-1 in 357 mag. Like a fool I traded it on a Springfield 1911, that turned out to be absolute junk.:(

I posted earlier that my first new purchase was my 640-1 .357.

My second was this Glock M36 .45 which turned out to be absolute junk like your Springfield.

1975 Chiefs Special, J-Frame. Sorry since the day I sold it. Paid $80 for it new through local police chief. Sold it for $200.

S&W M36 nickled, in 1979. Sold it to a Captain in my guard unit a few years later. Bought my first M60 to replace it a few months later.

4inch Model 629 .44 Magnum bought from the Wiesbaden Rod & Gun Club at the Mainz-Kastel Storage Station in Germany in July 1982 for my birthday. The first time I fired it, the barrel rotated in the frame (not P&R). It went back to WISCHO, the German distributor, and they "fixed" it, leaving an unsightly gap between the barrel and the frame. It still had the finest DA/SA I'd ever felt on a new gun. After the repair, I bet a friend the I could outshoot his new .30'06 rifle at 100 meters with it. He laughed, stood at the line like a man, and fired a 7 inch group offhand unsupported. I printed out, rested the 629 on a sandbag, and shot a 6.25 inch group. No money actually changed hands, but it made for lively conversation in the bar at the Rod & Gun Club. After surgery on my elbow in 1993, recoil from the .44 was just too much for me, so I didn't shoot it for years. Eventually, I sold it at a gun show so I could buy a Grail gun, a used 3 inch Model 13-3. The Model 13-3 is now "on loan" to my son-in-law. I kept my P&R guns.

The first S&W I bought was a new 686-6 six inch. I couldn’t believe this gun and what a huge step above my Taurus 66 it was. I remember thinking how thin and good looking it was. When I shot it I fell in love with that S&W single action trigger. I still to this day judge all double action revolvers off the look and feel of a smith. It started a huge hurting on my wallet, thankfully I wasn’t married at the time of my affliction
