What would you do with this Model 19?

Ok, I have been tinkering with the idea of having my 19-4 revolver tweaked. All those Night Guard pictures posted here got me excited, but the FTF horror stories ultimately cooled me off on the idea. So I was thinking of a round butt, 2 1/2" barrel, C&S extreme duty sights, and an action job to make my 19 a facsimile of a Night Guard. I live about an hour from Pinnacle High Performance. I would have the work done there.

I could always wander around looking for a used 2 1/2" round butt Model 66 and have work done to it. Not sure if that would be a better option cause I already own this revolver.

In its current configuration my revolver is just not living up to its potential. Give me some advice please! I will post pics of it as it is now...

Your 4" 19-4 looks nice, so I wonder what you mean by it "just not living up to its potential". Is it inaccurate, unreliable, or just not a 2.5"?

If the latter, I would sell it and buy/modify a 2.5" 19 or 66, which would save you some money in the end also. Good luck with your decision.

Round butt conversion and have the barrel bobbed to 3" you'll need a new front sight and ramp.

IF you are going to customize it, I wouldn't go for a new 2.5 barrel as you get the short ejector rod with it...

Seriously, why would you even consider chopping such a nice gun?
I'm sure you could trade pretty close to a stainless snubby and then have the work done. Probably be cheaper in the long run.

Wow, pretty unanimous feedback. To clarify, when I say its not living up to its potential I mean that it doesn't feel as good in my hands as I think it would with the aforementioned work. That being said it is a very nice revolver in very good shape.

It has been accurate and reliable. I guess you can't ask for more than that. Maybe picking up a used revolver closer to what I have in mind and using that as a base gun would be a little more prudent. Thanks for the heads up balldboy. If anyone else wants to throw their two cents in I'm all ears.

There's a huge variety of grips out there to make it feel better to you.
Otherwise, leave it alone.

I do. I don't need a 19-4 but if it would save it from being butchered I would buy it.

If you want it to "live up to its potential" but some ammo in it and put it in your pocket. I don't know what a "night guard" is but I have a feeling that its something that some marketing clown at S&W came up with to get you to buy guns. If you actually needed it the lock would fail and you'ed get beaten with it.

I love the gun AND the T-grip and would not change a thing. But of course, you will have to do what pleases you.

Between gunsmithing, rebluing, and parts you will spend more on the conversion than another gun. There are plenty of appropriate guns for sale here and elsewhere. Don't butcher that Model 19.

I would look for an older police trade in and modify it. Your gun is just too nice to butcher...

K or L frame, matte blue, short barrels, alloy frames (I think) and night sights in .38 Special to .45 ACP. Probably nice guns, but MSRPs are really high.

You currently own the best carry revolver ever made. I would "improve" it by adding a nice set of Herrett's Jordan Trooper grips and shooting the heck out of it.
