Well after all my responses to this post TOM the Moderator issued me an Inaction as a cross post

I'll say that ugly word. My new bedside and house gun is a Glock 22 with night sites and the +2 mag baseplates, stoked with 17 rounds of Federal HST. It will replace my duty H&K that has done bedside duty for several years since my kids have become adults and moved out.

I am very fond of my Smith revolvers, but bought the Glock for capacity, and .357 mag power, without the blinding flash and indoor muzzle blast.

‘...base of operations?’

What constitutes ‘entry’ in your world? I hear lotsa noises...every night. Now if you hear the front door being knocked off the hinges that is altogether another matter. But, SERIOUSLY, where/when does that happen?

Be safe.

PS: I get outta bed and look around the house if I hear something seemingly originating from inside. NEVER with a gun in hand.

There are over 1 million home nvasions/burglaries in the US annually where a person is home. So yeah it does happen. For me, big dog & currently usp40.

Relax. MANY of us have been spanked here a time or two. Or three. Or.......

Moderators don’t live here. They aren’t paid. And they don’t like being called out in public.

Take a deep breath.

S&W 64-4 with hbwc and a SD mod2 in .40 cal with 2 12 rd mags are in my quick access picture frame. I have a unique floor plan where two of my daughters are on the other side of the front door so a 410 with an 18” barrel and a pistol grip is also in my room. Luckily their room was an addition in what used to be the carport so it is solid concrete filled brick except for their door. My wife dislikes the placement of their bed but lost that argument when I pointed out 8” of wall my HD rounds can’t go through. I will say, no matter what you have on/in your nightstand, run through what your plan is with dry fire a few times. In my case I have to get to my girls so I have to exit the room, go down a 15’ hallway and through the great room. Practice using your light know your corners and be safe. Oh, make sure whatever you have next to you had a flashlight next to it, don’t be “that guy” that shoots your daughters boyfriend that she snuck into the house because your night sights are good enough.

I like my 686+ 3" for my nightstand gun. I feel that a revolvers shape is easier to grab when half asleep than a semi auto. And simpler operation make be better as well.
Next is the 870p just 10 ft away in the closet, and a glock 17 with 3 extra mags, flashlight. Med kit and knife in small shoulder bag hanging in closet. Next is a colt 6920 with 6 mags ready to rock in roll.
Both cars have g19's in them.
Everything else is in safe, or in stages of cleaning or mod'ing and unloaded.

I usually keep my EDC 9mm Shield close by since already loaded or M65 with .38 spl 158 gr JHP. I live in a apartment and low risk of home invasion but feel vulnerable leaving out early a.m. when dark.

Just an open question I have long ago made my decision Just seeking some other ideas.
So it is 3 am you hear an entry What is your base of operations?
Please exclude a 12 ga Pump I am seeking Other Bed stand weapons?
Just a mind teaser Your opinion?

A 4 inch .357 magnum loaded with the Winchester .357 mag full power 125 gr. SJHP.

I wait in my bedroom with wife and kid behind me, with the magnum pointed at the door.

Full size Sig 250 w flashlight attached. DA only trigger that is almost as good as a S&W revolver. 17 round mag. Double strike capability. Pistol fits me well. I pick it over a 1911 because I shoot it better w 1 hand. If I have to look for bumps in the night I'll have a spotlight in my nonshooting hand even if the pistol has a light. Spotlight is a lot brighter and I don't have to point a gun to light something up.

A recent uninvited guest in my backyard would tell you that that spotlight is blinding up close. Fortunately he kept backing up until he was gone. I would have been justified in shooting but am glad I didn't have to shoot. At one point my 12 year old son and the family Lab were between the intruder and me. My son wouldnt let go of the dog and i had to get around them so that i was between son and the intruder. My son now knows not to open the door when the Lab is growling in the middle of the night.

The young man was stumbling drunk and looking to get out of the weather. I'm not small but this guy was both bigger and a whole lot younger than me. I'm a worn 57 and my guess is that the guy was in his early 20s. Neither of us had on a shirt and while I'm not chubby I don't have 6 pack abs like the intruder did. Also he had about 4 inches on me. Big young strong and scary. While I believe he meant no harm he was 1 step away from getting shot before he started backing up due to me yelling at him and being lit up by the spotlight in his eyes. I doubt he ever saw the pistol in my hand. I was holding pistol in a retention position w my weak hand holding the light toward his face. Police found him the next morning passed out in a neighbors unlocked car.

Takeaway is if he had been on the front porch and been compliant to commands I'd probably told him to sit down on the porch and made him some coffee to sober and warm up. He was drunk and wet and we don't have cab service. Inside the backyard fence muttering incoherently while sticking his hand out like he wanted to shake hands (Or make a grab to get hold of me) he almost got shot. Frankly I'm glad I didn't have to shoot him.

I have no intention of hunting an invader in the dark. I will fort up behind the bed with the MP9 pointed at the door and will make a phone call. With luck, the invader will trip over the dog and hurt himself.
