What would your “bug out” handgun be?

In light of the crazy weather we’ve had, just curious what folks would pick out of their current inventory of a go to handgun if forced to evacuate. I know in some cases it’s the same as their regular EDC but not in all cases I’m guessing.

My daily is a 637-2 in a pocket holster and some speedloaders in the other pocket.

But if I had to pick a bug out it would be my Gen 3 Glock 19. It is a little beat up, has some steel night sights, several magazines and it has never jammed even on some crappy steel case stuff. I’m considering a replacement frame since the Gen 3 grip is not my favorite.

It was a toss up with my trusty 19-3 .357. Can use the same ammo as my snub and is pretty holster worn so no worries if it gets some road use but with parts availability plus ammo options the Glock 19 made more sense.

I’d still carry the snub as a back up but if I have to evacuate and get out of Dodge I’m reaching for the Glock 19.

So what would you grab handgun wise if you had to leave your home for awhile?

Beretta 92 Centurion; 17+1 plus spare 18/20rd mags.
Pairs nicely with a Beretta CX-4 9mm PC carbine.

Centurion is "fairly" compact as it uses the slide/barrel as the 92 Compact and only a .3" taller with the 17rd flat steel base plate Mec-gar mag.

Actually keep one in my "grab and go" bag

My Beretta 92 Compact, with a few spare magazines. Capacity is low on my list as number of magazines far outstrips a few more rounds in any single magazine.

And more importantly evacuating in my vehicle, my MP5 braced pistol and 7 30 round magazines. It gives you commonality with the 9mm pistol but 357 mag performance due to the longer barrel and the sights and stability to accurately engage head and torso sized targets out to 200 yards with very high hit probabilities.

I shoot the same load in both using a 124 gr Sig V-crown bullet. It expands more the faster it goes, but whether from a 3”, 4” or 8.9” barrel still gives good expansion and 16-18” penetration in 10% ballistic gel.

Of course, if the ATF’s reversal stands, it’ll end up being an SBR with much greater limits on where it can be legally taken and whether it can be legally carried loaded in a vehicle.

It doesn’t sound like a big deal to many people, but it is in fact a rule change that significantly limits the self defense usage of braced pistols in evacuation situations.

My SIG P226. A good reliable high capacity 9mm that will eat just about everything I have fed it. I have a good number of spare magazines and looting the JBTs is a potential source of resupply.

Pocket J-Frame, a pocket Glock 26 and a XDM on the waist. As many mags and backup ammo as I could take. But, most likely I wouldn’t leave. I got what I need here.

this would depend on the situation, are we bugging out for a few days or have the zombies come alive. if bugging out for a few days it would be some of my 9mm if it means bugging out for a very long time there would be a 22 in that line up. if you ever need lots of ammo 22 is the way to go, center fire stuff is heavy. I have 1600 rounds of 9mm in ammo cans and it takes alot to lift them

Why would I be bugging out?

Civil Unrest? A M-28 and a Rossi 92 carbine in 357. I have 100 yard defensive zone.

Government Collapse? A Sig 220 in 45 ACP and a very nasty long gun! I have a 1000 yard defensive zone.

Meteor from deep space? My Model 17, a Savage 24 in 22/20 gauge. I have a 35 to 50 yard hunting zone! (this is similar to my BOB now, but a different revolver!)

Alien invasion? (based on the Larry Niven novel "Foot Fall") A Sig 220 45ACP and medium to large bore elephant rifle! (probably a 375 H&H) Handguns are for human riff-raff!

Ivan

Current BOB has 350 round of 22 and 40 rounds of assorted 20 gauge. If I knew something was coming, I might up that a little!

CZ P07. Been carrying it for almost 2 years, over 1K rds mixedammo through it without issue. Have 7 standard capacity mags. 9mm is current issue for many folks, better chance of resupply. Joe

I live on a hill in the high desert. More likely to be snowed in - today is a possibility - than required to evacuate. A prairie fire? Might have to leave for a few hours.

So my EDC, currently a Ruger LW Commander-style in 9mm. Although my KelTec PMR 30 is a frequent companion and would serve.

Two H&R 904s in the backpack, my model 65 strong side holster, and my Marlin 30-30 for a long gun.

Like others have mentioned it kinda depends on what the bug out is for?

But if it's a meteor strike or massive volcano or something? I think I'd go with my S&W model 19 357 mag.

Enough power to do some hunting and since I'm not in a big city I doubt I'll face many spray and pray scenarios being chased by the insane clown posse. Could carry a good bit of ammo. Not that giant of a gun with the 4" barrel to semi conceal.

And in my opinion a bit more fool proof than a plastic wonder gun.
