Hello,
I'm new to the boards here. I had been looking for a high cap. 9mm pistol sense I sold my Taurus PT99 about 15 or so years ago.. My wife and I came across a S&W 6906 a few days ago in a somewhat local gun shop.. I think it's a 2 generation because of it's square rather big trigger guard. I happen to like this look though and it goes well with my big hands. I know most don't.. It's in SS with a alloy frame silver trigger and silver bobbed hammer with abby safety.. it's in great shape with only a little holster wear on the left side of the alloy frame very slight. came with 3 S&W 12 round mags. The shops mark down price was from $450 to $350 We ended up getting it for $320. Good price with 3 mags? I was wondering what year was it first introduced and when did they stop production of the ones with the odd square trigger guard? It looks to have some use but not much as far as I can see.. I fully field striped the gun and cleaned it well not that it was dirty but it was not lubed and needed that.. I used Hoppys cleaner and some Hoppy's oil and also gave every thing a good coat with some spray Rem. cleaner lube with Teflon. It feels great.. Also what can I touch up the alloy frame with on the few wear shinny spots? Any and all info on this pistol would be great.. looks like a great place to frequent. I did look up much info on this gun but could not find out much on the run of this model. Going to hit the range real soon with it and some other guns I have. It's been way to long.
Thank you for taking the time to read this! George

Ranger98,
Thanks for your reply! From what your saying in that year range your giving from your book, are you saying all pistols 6906 have the longer odd square trigger guard? or that's the 6906 model run with both types of trigger guards?I think I remember somplace on here that the square trigger guards were pre 1994's but I'm not sure.
Can any one else reply to some of the other questions I asked in my post? Maybe share a little on how we did price wise for the gun. Finish touch up on the alloy frame wear marks? We are excited with the purchase of the gun with 3, 12 round mags that we came crossed, just wanted to share in our enthusiasm! Thanks! George

Welcome to the forum.

All 6906s are considered "third generation" guns based on several features. The second gen equivalent would be the 669, and there is no first gen equivalent for this configuration.

I think 88-92 is about the range for the square triggerguard.

And I would say $320 w/ 3 mags for a nice example is a decent price.

RufusG,
Thanks for that info. I didn't know for sure it was a 3d gen. gun.. I feel better about the price payed for it now too.. good to talk to you! I think I did every thing I needed to do to it except shoot it.. Deciding if it's worth it as a range permit would end in Jan of this year.. I'll have to see if I can find someone I know with a guest pass and pick up one after the 1of 2012 to get the full years worth out of it.. Thanks again!! You have been most help full.. George

I bought my 6906 new in 91 and it had sqaured trigger gaurd. I recently bouht the wife one and it is rounded trigger guard. I'd say you did good for that price, enjoy it and be carefull 3rd gens grow on you. Dan

STL9MM,
Thank you that's good to know! Ya with three S&W mags and some ammo to go along with the deal. The wife and i did all we could to sweeten the deal.. it's my wife that fell in love with the gun she said you don't buy it I will! I have learned to go with her gut.. I got two more 12 round S&W mags on the way from a place called CDNN they are used but we'll see how they are when they get here... The guy in the gun shop said it's not to often that the wife wants the gun and it's the husband that does the thinking or keeps saying no.. I know if I didn't get it I would have been kicking my self for some time.. George

You got your 6906 at a good price. I paid $400 with only one magazine, but the weapon must have been kept in a drawer and rarely fired since there is not a mark on it. 3rd gen S&W's do grow on you because since getting the 6906 I have also obtained a 4006 and a 3953.
