What's a Gun-Friendly State to Move To?

I spend bout half my time in the Bluegrass and the rest in the Lone Star...

When Texas adopts open carry they will be purty much on par with Kentucky.

Never been a fox hunter, but do understand there's a few riding clubs around that participate in that discipline.

My gang is more of the rough & ready rodeo crowd.

Su Amigo,
Dave

Im thinking Virginia. Long as your driving is OK!!;) We are very gun friendly for the most part, I even have a nice range in my back yard, and never any complaints. No close neighbors for about 1/4 mile or so.

We have a Fox Hunting Club here as well, I believe it is called Glenn More Hunt Club I think, where they hunt on horses. I have seen them out in the open fields from time to time riding. I'm located in Augusta County. I hope you find what you're lookin for. Good luck.

Regards,
John

Washington == the dry side. Decent hunting, open carry allowed, shall issue. As of now, AR and silencer friendly.

Yes Washington is nice - as are the people here - votes Blue most of the time, but is more conservative than the vote shows on many issues. Nice thing about the east WA side is how close it is to Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. So if you like the great outdoors, less population, firearm friendly, it is a great place to be.

I'd say Montana but it get's awfully cold in the winter, horridly hot in the summer and on my last check it's full.

I'm in CA and TX is high on my list. The wife and I talk about moving to TX daily! We just need to talk to our kids to see if they'd be willing to move their families to TX also. We all have very respectable incomes and our tax dollars would be much better spent and appreciated in TX.

Also, Texas does not have state income tax.

Go west, sir. The Rocky Mountains beckon.

But stop before you get to the People's Republic of Kalifornia, where I live! When my old man passes away (which hopefully won't be for a long time) I am out of here. I am sick of the regulations. Arizona, Idaho or Texas look to be states where I can still have some freedom.

The wife and I are moving to Arizona as soon as the mortgage is paid! We are quite taken with the weather, the wide open spaces and the politics. Hopefully we'll be headed out in about 5 years. The folks from away can have Maine.
I wouldn't trade my New England upbringing for anything, but its time to move on.

Don't forget about Michigan. Fact is that our Concealed Pistol License is recognized in more states than any other state's permit. Open Carry is also perfectly legal and through a quirk in the Law those who have a Concealed Pistol License can use Open Carry to remain armed in Gun Free Zones. BTW, that particular exemption was intended to be for LEO only but after the process of amendments that exemption became applicable to everyone with a CPL.

Downside is the Michigan does have Handgun registration. However, there is a movement afoot to do away with Handgun registration and it's gaining traction with each passing year. On the plus side there is no registration of Rifles or other long guns, Silencers were recently made permissible and full auto's are permissible, however form 4 registration will naturally be required for any silencer or full auto. There are no magazine limits with the exception of capacity when hunting waterfowl. For Deer hunting it's a bit of a mixed bag, there is a dividing line drawn about halfway through the state below which you have to use handgun, shotgun, or black powder equivalent rifles during firearms season. Above that line the most common rifle used is the 308 with the 30.06 a close second. As for Fox Hunting, that is only done in the "tonier" areas where people like to make believe they are English Gentry, the rest of up grab a Mini-14 or AR-15 and go after Coyotes. BTW, lots of Coyotes in Michigan and they are becoming a problem, so the season on these varmints is year round with no limits beyond some common sense and some local ordinances restricting the use of rifles within city limits.

Other pluses. If you like boating Michigan is surrounded by some honking big lakes and we have a lot of very nice smaller lakes too. For winter sports we do have areas that experience Lake Effect snowfalls and as a result there are excellent areas for snowmobiling or skiing. However, the Skiing is vertically challenged so while there is plenty of snow most years you won't have the long runs you see out west or in Vermont.

Finally, if you like cars Michigan should be a Destination State. One annual event is the Woodward Dream Cruise which had a claimed 1.2 million visitors last year. Frankly, it's an event you have so see before you can realize it's scope but it's basically a 15 or so mile long show of every car of interest that has ever been made.

For a number of reasons, my wife and I have been having a similar conversation. A lot of this depends on where my kids end up. My son and his growing family are living in Alabama, near the coast. Nice area, gun friendly, people seem friendly. No snow!

The problem being as much as they love it there, his career might require him to move at some point.

My daughter has been talking about Texas when she graduates from college. I've been there a lot, my wife less, but we both like it down there.

Anywhere we've thought about is in the south, although neither of us are from there. Each winter is worse than the one before. Not the weather, but just the general dreariness. Plus the liberal politics of the northeast are not to our liking.

One other factor for me is that I'd like to be able to ride my bicycle year round instead of from late March to early October.

MA has similar, if not worse, restrictions than CT. With luck they won't get worse, but I doubt that they are going to get better.

Look at Kentucky. We are one of the most gun friendly states in the U.S., We have the right to keep and bear arms in our state constitution as well along with a pre-emption statute that prohibits local governments and cities from enacting their own firearm laws also our lawmakers have done a good job protecting that right. We can open carry just about everywhere with just a couple of exceptions and have a good concealed carry law. No restrictions on firearms or mags.
and we have fox hunting, also the ky horse park

What about NC? Gun friendly, good hunting and fishing. Only problem is that we are becoming a confinement area for relocated Yankees (CARY, NC)!

I moved to Connecticut nearly 50 years ago to attend college, and I stayed. Aside from great pizza, some of its appeal was the gun heritage: Colt, High Standard, Winchester, etc., etc. Connecticut has since become very gun-unfriendly (we've still got the "assault rifle" ban) and I fear that things may soon get much worse -- if not in the nation at large, then certainly here in this very, very blue state.

I am in the fortunate position of having a job I can do anywhere, and I have been entertaining the notion of finding a place that is more in line with my values. Aside from a state that honors the right to keep and bear arms, I'd want to find a place where I could practice my other passion, which is riding (fox hunting and/or western style).

Any suggestions?

I went fox hunting once.
Apparently it is said "tally ho, the fox!" and not "there goes that little ****er" They don't tell you that stuff when you but your little red jacket!!:D

I agree with "doublesharp" ... southern IN is pretty good. Not as wide open as the great west, but gun friendly, enjoy our outdoor recreation and appreciate a good game of basketball. (Just stop before you get to IL border.)

Southern Indiana is about perfect.

Michael:
I must put forth Florida for your consideration.

As to guns, we are nick-named the Gunshine State, and for good reason.

And as for fox hunting, I suggest Florida cannot be beat. I see so many foxes, just waiting to be hunted and maybe caught on Clearwater Beach, Ft. Myers Beach and Miami Beach. And walking down the malls, they're everywhere!

Unfortunately, my wife does not allow me to fox hunt, but, if she did, Florida would be the place. :D

Come on down to PA! We've got fairly good statewide gun laws , no registration , no mag ban/cap limit , shall issue LTCF , open carry OK , heck , ya can even own full-autos if ya can afford them.

And we got some great pizza joints too!

Just stay away from the big blue cities like Philthadelphia , Allentown , Reading , Pittsburgh , etc.
