Fresh Elk Steak and fried 'taters.

Just got this guy a couple days ago. (after three days of hunting my idiot horse who desided to go home).

Wife never had elk, so I'm fixing her some steaks.

What's the rifle you used?

I normally take a spare (two rifles) elk hunting. Both Model 70s. one a 270 Win and a 375 H&H.

Toward evening, I switch to the 375, I'm too old and lazy to chase wound elk in the dark. I figure there is no chasing with a good hit with that rifle.

I used 250 grn Sierra Game Kings. Went through one set of ribs out the other without damaging any meat. Also didn't take a step after being hit.

Congratulations ! I went deer hunting today but we were really scouting elk and confirming whereabouts of elk camp in two weeks. We saw three elk too, Roosevelts. Gosh they're FAST. I hope I get one. I like your .375 H&H approach too; I'll be using my .338 Winmag. CB

Most things with any sense are DRT when a 375 comes calling.

I had the dubious honour of sharing a 200 yard range one afternoon with two gents doing their initial sighting in with their elk guns. One was using a .30-378 Weatherby and the other guy had a .300 Remington Ultra Mag. My shoulder hurt just listening to their guns, and I got a real twinge when one explained how hot their loads were.
