What's has been the hardest S&W for you to find

For me it's been a Model 27-2 with a 6.5 inch barrel. They are out there but the ones I've seen have been either way over priced or just beater grade revolvers.

I'll vouch for that. Ended up with a Pre Model 27 6 1/2" from a friend when I couldn't pay what the man wanted for his.
 
I don't have the money to swim in the big fish ocean of Registered Magnums and such but for me the hardest to find, and actually have the money to afford, was a 4" NIB 24-3. It took 25 years for the stars to align.

My most-wanted gun right now is a no-dash 640 in .38 Special (no lock) in good shape. I haven't seen any in my area (so far). There've been a few I've seen for sale online, and a couple that I bid on until the bids exceeded my budget. When I see them for sale, I don't have the money. When I have the money I either don't see them for sale or the price is too high. I just had a big car repair that will make any gun purchases before the end of the year unlikely.

Some day I'll get one!

All I want is one of the first 16 post war K22's. K101-K116. Any one would do.

The one that I never see is the model 547.I would really like to have the 3" version.l
 
I will have to agree the 6.5 27 is scarce by me, I have never seen one at a gun shop or a gun show. The 58 also is hard to find, come to think of it any nice smith is getting harder and harder to find at a reasonable price. I have found quite a few 3.5 27's and usually end up buying them I just cant resist even if the price is high. I figure I can always get my $ back but will probally keep them forever, they are my favorite.
 
Art your collecting tastes are like mine.
Condition is everything, so I'll answer your question by saying the hardest S&W to find is the one that's in collectible condition.

It takes time, knowledge and sometimes luck to put together a modest collection of good revolvers.

I've bought common revolvers at more money than I should of paid because I wanted a good example.
Because it was a hard S&W to find.:)

There's the 686+ stocking dealer special. I passed one up for $500 a couple of years ago and have been kicking myself ever since.

And a pre-lock 696. All of the gunshows that I have attended in Topeka over the years and I have only seen one. Guess I need to broaden my horizons and investigate new territory.
 
Prewar .38/44 Heavy Duty 3 1/2" barrel. According to the SCSW they made some, but are quite rare.
Would like to have one of the original 5" M29s, only about 200 made.
A 5" 1950 Target .44 Spl. would be really nice, as well as a 1950 Target in .45 Colt, especially with a 4" or 5" barrel.

65 Hunter?

Now there's one I wasn't aware of. I recently got a 65-3 3inch RB that I am real fond of, but what is a "hunter" Like. I have a 629 Hunter, is it anything like that? Thanks, Flapjack.

Thanks for the picture because that's the beast I've been looking for and it's in the condition I'm after. You had one heck of a show if you found that one and a 4 inch 27-2 at the same show. I must say that I'm sure if I did a full court press in my search and I was willing to pay whatever it took I'd probably find one. The 6.5 inch Model 27 is easier to find if you look at the earlier versions then the 27-2 so I may also try that.

The model 65 hunter had the full shrouded barrel and was embellished on the side plate...I believe that there were only 10 or so made...I have only seen one in pictures. It looks very similar to a Lady Smith 65, but less 'girly'. Maybe Doc44 has one or a photo? And the hunter is a 3" version as well.
 
I was on the trail of a .38-44 Outdoorsman since I first spotted one a few years ago, then I saw the prices. I had just about given up on one and then my friend who comes up with Smith revolvers in odd places showed me the shooter. So for $400 and a little wear (I always meant the gun to be used) I now have mine. The second gun was my 4-inch Model 57 which I had also given up on for a while then the same shop, and although the finish is worn, there was no flame cutting and almost no markings at all on the recoil shield. It was a cop's gun from Vermont.

Dang, Bill. Made me laugh.

If you find two, I'll pay top dollar for the castoff. Heck, I'll even take K118, if it comes to that.

I'm also having a hard time finding that solitary RM in .22 LR.
 
Until yesterday, 3" barrel S&W 547 M&P shooter at the right price (less than $700).
 
it's getting hard to find early and in good condition 1917's 45 DA. Has to
have correct grips and hammer for me to buy it....
