OK, ive been THINKING of buying some but-haven't (for myself) due to extremely high prices. I did buy a tin full of it for someone at work as a "secret santa" Christmas gift. It was around $35 bucks-yeah-I was about $10 over limit but???

Anyway, is their chocolate THAT good? Ive had Swiss chocolates, German chocolates and Norwegian chocolates-yeah they are good-but not the best ive had. Id rate the good stuff about like Hershey's. The German ive had include Merci-which is excellent and kinda pricy. I just bought some Belgian chocolates because they were 50% off $10 in a soldier-shaped box at that. So I'm fixing to see what's so special about harry London chocolates.

So whattya all say????

Any chocolatiers or chocolate experten here???

Price differences are ridiculous. Quality German chocoloate bars, like Ritter, or Swiss, like Lindt, that I regularly find in Germany for 69 or 99 cents on sale, will set you back $2.50 or 2.99 here. And Lindt actually produces here now, although they actually manage to maintain Swiss quality.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this country, but chocolate is one of the few things where no American brand will ever come close to German-Swiss-Belgian stuff.

I grew to like the taste of european chocolates - definitely tasty, but it depends on what you want. Some of it is not to my taste, but I like the chocolate taste rather than the cocoa taste some have.

godiva I have had in small packs and although good, would not say the best - to me...

Just as most "luxury" items - More moneyed purchasers will associate high prices with high quality (not necessarily true), and it also provides Snob Appeal. My personal example, Fleischmann's gin is among the lowest priced on the market, yet to me it tastes better than the most expensive imported gins you can buy, and I have tried them all. Regarding chocolate, Hershey's is about as good as it gets. The local Dollar Tree store occasionally stocks several varieties of chocolate bars (dark and milk chocolate) made in Poland, I think they are 3-1/2 ounces for $1.00, and they are excellent. I always stock up on those dark chocolate bars when Dollar Tree has them.

Only way to find out is to try some.

I think they’re pretty good, but you may disagree.

There's real chocolate and not. I don't know what Godiva uses but Hershey's is not real chocolate. It's milk chocolate which has a ton of sugar added and deluded with milk. Real chocolate is bitter and good.

I buy these. They are about 1.5lbs of 90% chocolate where as Hershey's is about 10% chocolate

When I lived in Switzerland (1980's), a pretty gift box of chocolate was the standard gift for everyone, including close family. The larger supermarkets might have several aisles of chocolate gift boxes. In the nearby cantonal capital of Aarau, a chocolatier made some outrageous treats.

The better chocolates were all good, but when the presents were exchanged on Christmas eve, and the chocolate boxes were opened and shared, you could taste the difference in the less expensive chocolates.

Nothing wrong with Godiva. I'd bet they will be enjoyed.

You could always slip a treat in with the chocolate.

I can't say as I've never had Godiva, but I've never been particularly picky about chocolate. I've yet to have any chocolate where I said to myself, "Well, I'm never getting that again!"

Probably the "fanciest" (not sure if that's the appropriate word to use) chocolate I've gotten was See's Candies, and I liked them a lot.

I like good chocolate that is worth the asking price.

I buy the Lindt 70% Cocoa bars.

The ones that are higher than 70% Cocoa are too bitter for my taste.

I'm just about exactly the same. Lindt is my favorite chocolate brand, and 70% cocoa is the highest I'll go.

I can't remember the brand, I don't think it was Lindt, but I once had some dark chocolate with sea salt and almonds...very tasty.
