What's so "fancy" about Godiva Chocolates? that is worth the price?

Don't much care for Hershey's anything, with the exception of their Special Dark bars and powder, which is pure cocoa.
Ghirardelli has some awesome chocolate varieties. My wife uses their dark semi-sweet bits in her cookies, and I love the same ones for making ganache frosting.
We serve dark Dove bites at the winery. Hard to go wrong with Dove.
Godiva is good, but I don't think it merits the price.
On the other hand, you can literally make a lady swoon with a gift of L.A. Burdick chocolate. Many of their offerings are made from single farm sourced beans, and their confections are absolute works of art in addition to being almost absurdly tasty. Not a wealthy man by a long shot, but wife's once a year joy when her Christmas Burdick's arrives is worth every cent. Here's a link to their decadent bar chocolate. Dig around the website for their confections, powders etc.

To each his own, but....

You had me right up to the Dutch Master and White Owl cigars, as I'd sooner smoke a rolled up grease rag, then those (I've found a few different "throw aways" that can be found on the cheap, yet smoke great).

As to coffee, I'm all for a cup or two (or ten) of Maxwell House (or Chock full o' Nuts!), but Folgers, I draw the line right there!

... you do agree that expensive and exotic doesn't have to mean 'better' in each person's tastes. What are the cheapie cigars that you like? I don't smoke any more, but in case I get an urge....

Maxwell House is my all time fave, but I learned to like Folger's because everybody at work drank it.

I told me wife the other day that through and through, I am 'flannel'. It describes me to a 'T'. Plain and simple.

It is no better than Hersey's chocolate, but it impresses most of the women. Nothing better than a Snicker's bar to me, but I am just a practical guy.

Speaking for myself and when buying for myself, I'm a cheapskate. Now when I bought for Sabrina or for some other ladies friends--ill buy more expensive stuff.

A store called World Market located in Texas (not sure about other states) has a very good selection of imported chocolates and other foods and wines

I'd totally forgotten about them, we've got one here less than 1/2 mile from where I'm sitting.

Not a big chocolate eater myself or is my wife .. Most Americans have no idea what good chocolates taste like as they are not readily available to us .. In Europe each little town will have a wine shop and small made in store chocolates store ..

My niece honeymooned in Paris and brought back 2 very large boxes of a variety of both filled and solid candies from there .. and at a reception for the family they opened and passed out one of the boxes over 100 candies ..

I fell in love again from when I was much younger and had the opportunity to indulge in some .. The filled chocolates with brandy are my favorites ..

If you can't taste the difference,
No reason for you to pay the difference.
Doc told me to back down on sugar, so I don't eat much chocolate anymore.
Coffee - love my locally roasted coffee.
Would hate to go back to grocery store coffee!

Ive not had Godiva yet but Terri told me she'd bring me a sample or two Jan 1st. I was comparing the Harry London with Hersheys and I think they taste the same only Hersheys of course-is much cheaper and easier to get. I do like the H.L, but not the price it comes with.:D

Home made FUDGE.....

I could eat pounds of old home made fudge. When we would 'camp out' in the back yard we'd spend a good part of the night roaming the neighborhoods. One time my Mom made a giant pot of fudge and I swear that she did that to keep us near the house. We were running in and out of the bathroom all night.:confused::p:D

Ok, the expensive stuff might be some better.....

But for the price it needs to be a WHOLE LOT better. I'll stick with Hershey's.:)

Regardless of price - and I've tried many many of the higher end - fancy (supposedly) Chocolates, my ALL TIME FAV is Hershey's Special Dark!

When I was 50 one of my friends bought me 12 license plate sized Chocolate bars from around the world including France, England, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, etc and a year later he asked me "so what do you like the best"? When I looked him straight in the eye and said Hershey's Special Dark he just shook his head and laughed. I guess it's just what I am use to and find it the best to my personal taste.

We get a box of Godiva Chocolates (expensive I would think) each year from Neighbors at their Christmas Party and after the party we give it to someone at my Wife's volunteer job because neither Mrs. Chief38 or I like them - too sweet.

OK folks, I just tried my very first and likely my last Godiva chocolates-unless I win the lotto??

I am at Barnes and Nobles-and lo and behold-some of the Christmas stuff-the 3 tiny figurines box that = maybe 1 & 1/2 mini reeses peanut butter cup-is on sale today at 75% off-means its only $2 instead of $8. Its just regular chocolate. However, I found by accident-that they had three dark chocolate bars with almonds-each for .85 cents-normally $3 bucks each-so I bought em all.

I just tried one-it IS good, but--I think Dove is still the way to go and it tastes like Dove's to me. Maybe like Hershey's Dark as well? Guess ill have to sample another bag of those too-just to make my taste buds remember correctly? :D
