what's the deal with razors?

Try dollar shave club for the double blades...they will give you first month free for asking..cost about 3 bucks a month and I shave 6 days a week...I'm the same as you I can't use more than 2 blade rigs...theirs are Good.

This ^ ^ ^. I've been a member for about two years now. I use the four bladers, but they ship the two bladers as well. I changed over when the cost of blades began approaching the cost of craft beer. Their shave butter is up there with the best, and it's all reasonable and hassle free.

........

Who knows about Harry's razors? All I can find is sponsored by them, hardly an objective look.

Give Harry's a try. I give Harry's a thumbs up and have used their products for over a year. Their blades shave more comfortably and seemingly closer than the examples of store bought brands like Gillette and Schick and seem to maintain their edge for about 6-10 shaves. Harry's Foaming Shave Gel gives a smooth shave and their After Shave Balm compliments the overall experience.

Ditto on the Dollar Shave Club (DSC). I've been using the 2-blade cartridges for the last couple of years. (Or whenever they started.) My only con is the handle they give you takes some getting used to but works great. The connection to the blades is different. (Sort of claw grip.) I suspect to get around patents.

I didn't care for the Shaving Butter. While it works great, I had a hard time washing it off to get rid of the slimy/slick feel. I went back to my Edge shaving gel.

You can add to or stop your subscription at any time. DSC will send you blades every month. I think I have about 3-4 months worth in stock and change them at the first sign of "the scratchies". The blades are very good.

I really liked the Gillette three bladed razors, however the local stores quit carrying the large packs a couple years ago when all the Fusion hype and four or five blade giant head razors took over. Those big heads make it darn tough to trim around my Van Dyke! So, I went old school and purchased a Parker safety razor, boars hair brush, shaving soap and a mug from Amazon.

I've experimented and found that for my tough, wire like beard and sensitive skin combination, the Parker razor and Shark brand blades work the best. I can buy 100 Shark blades from amazon for about $12. I get three or four shaves per blade- usually three. For less than $20 per year I can shave every day. I was spending $10-$15 per month on Gillette razors! The shave soap works WAY better than the Edge sensitive skin gel I was using and costs less too. Plus, the shaving process, though more involved, is more pleasing. I get better shaves too!

PS- If you use the right blades for your razor/skin combination you will not cut yourself any more often with a safety razor than any multi-blade $$$ disposable.

I've bought my razors from Dorco for a couple of years. From what many say Dorco makes the razors sold/shipped by Dollar Shave Club. I know the handle I have is exactly what DSC used to ship. (Maybe it's what they still ship.) I like Dorco better than the club model. I believe it's cheaper but....more importantly for me......I don't like the automatic delivery thing. I'll buy stuff when I need it thank-you-very-much.

Dorco razors are extremely reasonable - and have worked fantastically well. One cool thing (I haven't confirmed this in a while - so if you go this route you might want to) is that *ALL* their handles are compatible with *ALL* their cartridges. So you could buy a handle and 2-blade cartridges now - and try cartridges with more blades later if you want.

If you really want 2-blade you might have a look at this. Replacement cartridges (2-blade) are further down on the page.

Dorco Pace Comfort Thin 2, Two Blade Shaving Razor System, TNA3006

They don't appear to offer a 2-blade disposable - but they do have a 3-blade disposable.

I've gone back to using an electric shaver at the moment. When I shave manually, I love the powered Gillette Fusion ProGlides. The blades are expensive, but a little maintenance will make them last forever. My current Fusion, the one with what they call the FlexBall, has about 8 or 9 months of use on the current blade. I hate shaving, so I only shave about 3 times a week. I don't have to shave everyday like some do. Before I learned how to properly maintain the blades, I bought a replacement pack of 4, for my previous powered Gillette Fusion ProGlide. I stupidly threw the old blade out and wish I hadn't. My original powered Fusion ProGlide that I got back around 2011 or 2012, has it's original blade with about 4 or 5 months of use. The "lubrication" strip has long since worn away on my blades. Unless I get overly aggressive in my shave, I get no nicks whatsoever, and I go with and against the grain.

This is what I do to maintain the blades: Before I shave, I run the blade against my arm about 15-20 times. I also cut a piece of denim off an old pair of paints about 6" long. Once a week, I would run the blade across the denim 15-20 times in one direction. Then I would turn the denim piece around and do it again in the other direction. You're basically stropping the blade. If you want to try this on your blade, and it's a bit gunked up, you may need to run it across the denim more times. When I first did it, I ran the blade across about 30 times in each direction. You will definitely see a difference in the edge of the blade. After every shave I rinse the blade with hot water, blow it off, and dry it on a towel. I also store the blade in a cabinet so it's not near the sink all the time. That's all it takes to keep those expensive blades going indefinitely. For me, I get bored of my Gillette Fusion handle before the blade needs to actually be replaced anymore. They last so long for me now, that I'll just buy a new handle when Gillette makes it look new. :D

I went back to double edge blades an a safety razor. You can but a pack of 5 or 10 blades for $2or 4 bucks.

I went to this about 1 month ago and have yet to cut myself. Great shave and for $50, I got the razor and 250 blades. I think I am good for at least 5 years.

Braun. Electric. Haven't used a blade in years.

In 1949 when I reached the"ripe old age of 10", a hardware store across the road from my then home in the NW of the UK, had put a batch of US Army safety razors (Gilette) on sale for the then princely sum of 6 pence each. I persuaded my father that I should buy two, one for him and one for me (though it was 6 years later before I used it). I still have both of them and use the double-edged Wilkinson Sword blades. Even my wife has grabbed one of them in place of her "Venus razor"!! They will outlast me and my son has his eye on at least one of them in due course. So an almost 80 year old pair of razors are still going strong. Dave_n

Remington's simple two-head electric razor has been my go-to shaver for years. Now it costs almost 4 times as much for refills, so I'm going back to a blade. Thanks for the recommendations.

Double edge safety razor for me.

I have a couple of different razors-I started with an old Gillette that was about $10, but now mostly use my grandfather's old Gillette Tech. Old Gillettes are usually cheap to buy and for the simpler ones there really is nothing to go wrong(I have a Slim that unfortunately is way out of adjustment). I was on vacation and in a pinch, so went to Walgreens and bought a new Van Der Hagen branded razor-it looks to be more or less a copy of a basic twist to open Gillette and is not bad at all.

I sampled the full gamut of blades, but settled on Derby blades changed every 3 days. They are about $15 for 200 on Amazon. I've also come to appreciate Feather blades as I've become more experienced, but don't use them that often. Even if I did, though, they're still cheaper than cartridge razors at $25/100.

I rarely cut myself, especially now that I've been using one for ~2 years. For the times I do, I keep a can of grocery store Alum(from the spice rack) by my sink. I just wet my finger, sprinkle on a little bit to make a paste, and rub it over the cut-that will stop it bleeding immediately(alum is what styptic pencils use).

So how much does a razor and blades for a month cost now days ??

Guess I have probably saved enough by not shaving for the past 40 some years to buy a new car ..

Was always getting ingrown facial hairs because of my curly hair .. the doctor in the Air Force told me the only way to get rid of them was to quit shaving so I did the day I got discharged from the Air Force back in March of 72 ..

I always have used an electric razor. My son tried to get me to change to a blade so I decided to try it and see if it would work for me. I did all I was supposed to do, all lathered up and ready. I took one pass with the blade and my initial thought was "this is barbaric". Immediately went back to the electric razor. For me it's quicker and a lot less messy. I won't go to a blade if you pay me to do so.

Back when I was a Junior in High School, I finally chose the Gem razor, that used the heavy single blade.

It just felt better and did a better job for me than the Gillette
single blade, safety razor.

I had to use the old safety razor, a few months ago, when I finally got my neck brace off, after six weeks. The rehab's twin blade would not do the job and were cheap and dull.

With the help of the nurse and my wife.................
I did not loose too much blood but had a lot of tissue paper sticking to me .

Those old Gillette type razors remove hair and any thing else that gets in the way !!

My son has decided to go old school and go to the shaving mug, brush, etc. I gave him a couple of my old safety razors that were at least 40 or 50 years old. I don't remember whether they were mine or my grandfather's. Remember those old adjustable ones with the numbers on a little wheel on the handle? I even had a pack of the old Wilkinson Sword double-edged blades I gave him. I can't wait to see what that old thing does to his face.:D
