Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm not finding much on the NRA website. What can you tell me on NRA certification?

Several questions off the top of my head:
- Is it good training?
- What's available?
- How much does it cost?
- How long is the certification good for?
- What can you do with it? (Besides teach Boy Scouts)

Thanks in advance,
Herk

It's a good thing!

Costs vary, talk to a local training counselor. The training may be $150 to $500, depending on the discipline. Annual fees are minimal. Certification is good for a year, but you can renew for three years at a time. You can teach classes, you can run a range if you're an RSO, and you can impress chicks with your knowledge, skills and attitude. Safety first! :D

I'm NRA certified as a Personal Protection, Pistol and Range Safety Officer. I have also had training at several of the nationally known defensive shooting schools. I work with about a dozen NRA instructors ( current and retired LEO, combat vets, prosecutors, correctional officers, a psychologist and a potter ) who volunteer to teach a state approved carry permit class using the NRA Pistol and Personal Protection curriculum . It is a seven session class including a live fire range qualification test and a written test with 100% required on both. I see the NRA courses as excellent basic training in safe gun handling and basic tactics. We often get men and women who either have been victims of crime or are living alone in rural areas and need to know how to defend themselves. Some have never fired a gun before our class. We advise the students to continue their training by regular practice, competition in USPSA, IDPA, or ICORE, as well as taking additional defensive shooting classes. We work for free but many people teach as a little side business. It is an enjoyable thing to do and you feel that you may be making a difference in helping good people defend themselves legally and intelligently.

I believe at one time they used to offer a casting certification...but I think liability had something to do with it.

Any organization is only as good as it's members, so we need to complain that these items aren't on the website.

I'm certified, but not certified to teach the courses.
Maybe when I get a bit more time I can.

Wow, I would have to go 400 miles to take a Metallic Cartridge Reloading course!
They previously offered a "home study" program for shotshell and metallic cartridge, if you were already certified in another discipline and over 100 miles from a course. Check with the NRA training division and see if it's still available.

I've been a certified rifle, pistol and personal protection instructor since '94 or so and never used any of them, although I keep the certifications current. I don't remember what the classes cost, but I think the renewals run $30 or so every two years.

Thanks, guys! I'll have to dig a little further. I definitely want to be RSO certified so I can help my young'uns through Boy Scouts when the time comes. I need to check b/c the council is begging for people to step up. They might even pay for the class.
