I was hoping to get a shield without thumb safety, but I'm on the fence now all I see is complains on newer shields. I used to read bunch of great reviews about it in fact I had a shield in 9mm with thumb safety it was a flawless gun never had an issue with it.

So...You picked your user ID after "flawless gun" and then got rid off it? Search for ANY gun on the internet and you can find plenty of complaints. If a gun has over 1,000,000 sold, there's bound to be some lemons. For every complaint there are many satisfied users, and you can count me among those. 2,000 rounds now with no issues whatsoever.

I have a couple newer Shields manufactured in 2015, with the thumb safety and they have been flawless. It would help if you cited specific complaints about the Shields.

Your title says - What's wrong with newer shields??
My answer is lack of quality control (as of late)
And this is from my own 1st hand experience.

All you see is complaints? Like ZWW said..."It would help if you cited specific complaints about the Shields."

From everything I've read about the Shield's I would not be worried one bit about buying a new one.

I've had my NTS Shield 40 for right at 2 years and it has not hiccuped once.

There are so many Shields out there it has reached critical mass. Over a million sold. Internet lowest price hit $329 and virtually every new shooter taking CCW class has a new Shield. They are great little guns and usually run great right out of the box, after a good cleaning and lube.

As for the thumb safety, I personally like the manual safety because my M&P has a Apex trigger kit. The Performance Center Shields have thumb safeties, I suspect because of the lighter trigger.

The Shield is the best quality for the money of all the single-stack 9mm's out there, but not the same quality as a G43, XDS, CM9, 938...

I had a shield in 9mm with thumb safety it was a flawless gun never had an issue with it.

And now you want a guarantee that the next one you buy will be just as good?
Good luck with that, regardless of the brand or model involved. That is the bane of the "gun swapper." Each gun is its own entity and identical models often aren't.
If I get a "flawless gun" it has a home for life.

I've taken 5 different CCW classes over the last year (all same curriculum)
out of the 20-25 students in each class almost every single one had a Shield in 9mm.
Makes for a boring "hey what are you shooting? " conversation but it is a testament
as to how popular these little guns are.

I'm referring to new shield owners, latest production, manufacture, whatever is called. I'm not taking about your 5k rounds shield I know there's plenty of happy owners I was one of them and have no complain, but If you look at the fist 5 pages there is a least 10 threads about new shields having issues, won't fire, slide stuck, guide rods, etc...Not everybody will be happy with their product and some will complain but I just noticed a slight increase of complains, just wondering nothing to create a big issue about it.

I think it is a combination of factors. Popular production guns will probably have a higher percentage of those who fall through the cracks. QC in such a mass production will have more problems with materials. New shooters who blame the gun insread of their own techniques combined with the suffering quality control in ammo or underpowered ammo( does not apply to all). Only bad experiences get a lot of press time since no one complains about their good experience unless they want better sights or triggers or modification of grip. And of course let us not forget those who complain that the gun is not like brand x firearm.

My answer to OP........absolutely nothing.

I would venture to say a lot of people who complain about their guns don't know what they are talking about. They limp wrist it, they ride the slide or but their thumb where it shouldn't be. They shoot low left and want to blame it all on the gun. There is a reason the Shield is hard to rack and installing a SS guide rod and spring will over come that reason but it will also let the slide pound its stops harder.

Also if we heard from everyone that liked their Shield this forum would be over run with post.

all you read are complaints. How many people post "nothing unusual happened to my shield"?

I'm sure its just like those who post poor reviews or complaints on certain car models, tv's, hotels, etc - bad news always travels further than good news.

And with a million Shields produced and out there, if 99.9% (plug in any #) are good that still means 1000 pcs are bad. Could the quality drop slightly as production ramped up higher to meet demand? Sure, it is possible. And as more are sold to potential first time shooters, could that mean more issues that are user based but still blamed on the gun? I'd say yep.

Most of us have had the expected good luck with our Shields, and some have not. Nice thing about forums, it allows us all to be vocal with our opinions. And at least on this site, those usually are cordial and even helpful.
;)

My Shield 9mm is only 3 mos old. I have 500 rounds through it and not one failure of any kind. I have left it stock, but I did buy it with night sights. I couldn't be happier with it.

I bought 2 since last Christmas. A traditional and a PC. Both have been perfect!
