What's Your Favorite Quote....

Union Major General John Sedgwick, who at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, in May 1864, was heard to say, in reference to the Confederate sharpshooters 1,000 yards away, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." Moments later, he became the highest ranking Union general killed in action, felled by a head shot that caught him just under the left eye.

"One lie, well told, is worth a thousand truths."
Mark Twain may be the source.
Seems to be the mantra of many politicians.

Work experience wisdom

'Wars are fought by engineers, lawyers bayonet the wounded, cost accountants strip the bodies.'

Engineer 1911 after attending a continuing education course on effective design and product liability.

A current favorite.

"A hypocrite despises those whom he deceives, but has no respect for himself. He would make a dupe of himself too, if he could."

William Hazlitt

Actually, that quote originated with Robert Heinlein. I'm sure Col. Cooper picked up on it, though.

Here's another from R.A. Heinlein's " Note books of Lazerus Long" (one word modified for decorum)
"Never throw manure at an armed man.
Never stand next to anyone throwing manure at an armed man."
These are words to continue living by.

" Keep it up America, keep telling your youth that mud and danger are only fit for intellectual pigs. Keep on saying that only the stupid are fit to sacrifice, that America must be defended by the low brow and enjoyed by the highbrow. Keep vaunting head over heart, and soon the head will arrive at the complete folly of any kind if fight and meekly surrender the treasure to the first bandit with enough heart to demand it.

From the book Helment For My Pillow, by Robert Leckie.

This was written in the 1950's but is spot on in modern times.

A bit different take on the thread, but one of my all time favorite quotes:

"I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend." Thomas Jefferson

My all time favorite quote:

"For God so loved the World that He gave His only-begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Jesus Christ (John 3:16)

Churchill says...

Two of my favourites from Winston are (and I may be off by a word or too):

- A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

- In war, the truth is so precious that it should be wrapped in a bodyguard of lies.

Something like that.
